A Perfect Mother's Day Gift

Create a Peace Movement That Ends the Iraq Occupation and Prevents Future Wars of Aggression
By Cindy Sheehan

Julia Ward Howe, the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, became so horrified with the carnage of the Civil War that she began advocating for a Mother's Day of Peace She published the Mother's Day Peace Proclamation in 1870. By 1873, 18 cities celebrated Mother's Day of Peace celebrations - some of these celebrations continued for 30 years. Still today, we have the enduring legacy of Mother's Day.

Now we are faced with the modern carnage of the occupation of Iraq, and still there are threats of another war of aggression in Iran. The Iraq policy is fatally flawed, especially for the nearly 2500 US deaths and for every one of these there has been 100 dead Iraqi civilians. We have to do something to build a peace movement that can stop blood-bathed foreign policy. We've demonstrated, written letters, sung songs, engaged in civil disobedience and traveled far and wide engaging our fellow Americans to demand that the troops come home.

Hundreds of thousands of us marched in the streets of New York City for Peace, Justice and Democracy on April 29th.

What's next? What can we do now? What tools do we have left in this democracy of ours?

Now is the time for the peace movement to get electoral. Americans opposed to preemptive war need to vote for what they believe in, and not vote for candidates that support war. Let's turn the majority of Americans into an electoral majority that can redirect the United States

The November elections are rapidly approaching, and the primary races come even sooner. Many are close elections where every vote is important. Candidates are jockeying for your support. We must tell them - 'you don't get my vote unless you oppose the occupation of Iraq and will work to prevent future wars of aggression.'

Peace voters are now a solid majority and we must send a clear message to all candidates that no longer will we tolerate avoiding the issue of war - when it is spilling the blood of tens of thousands for oil, bankrupting our nation, and cravenly blocking real solutions to our energy crisis.

We must vote peace in the primaries. And, we must vote peace in the general elections. If there are no peace candidates for federal office in your area, send your contribution, or donate your volunteer time in some other area that does have a peace candidate in the race.

All we need is for a FEW peace candidates to win for the hawkish powers-that-be will stand up and take notice.

There is another important way to register your support for peace candidates.

This May 14th on Mother's Day, I am going to sign a Voters Pledge committing myself to against voting for any candidate who does not publicly vow to bring a rapid end to the Iraq occupation and to preventing future wars, like Iran.

Cindy Sheehan is a co-founder of Gold Star Families for Peace and the mother of Casey Sheehan who was killed in Iraq.

VotersForPeace is a joint project of Gold Star Families for Peace, Democracy Rising, Peace Action, Code Pink, UFPJ, and more, working to bring the peace movement together to think and act as voters this election year. Please join me and sign the Voters Pledge and spread the word far and wide. Our goal is to get 2 million voters to sign the pledge - so we can go back to these legislators and candidates and say 'We will no longer tolerate your wars!"

Here we go again!!!

When will you stop being such a BI***. How dare you disrespect the US the way you have. How dare you call for the buying of CITGO gas over this nations. Just put money in the pocket of another loser like Chavez. Do you not enjoy living in this country? Where else in the world could you speak your mind like you have? That is what the US is about. Freedon of speech, which you take for granted. Now, as a member of the majority of the public that supports the men and women in uniform, SHUT THE HELL UP!!!! Do you beleive this country was founded by pacifist? I think not. We are a strong country that is not becoming bankrupt or fighting a war for oil. If you look at the history of Iraq, we should have gone there prior to Desert Storm/Desert Eagle and wiped out Hussein and his regime for crimes against society. You have no idea of what chemical weapons he has used. Not only on the Iranians, but also on his own people. The "Noble Cause" was just late, but I am proud of my brothers and sisters in uniform, even your son. He gave his life for a reason. You still have not seen that yet, but I am sure if he was alive today, you would not be demoralizing our president and troops. Sheehan, get a real life, stop spreading your legs for everyone to join you.

Afraid To Identify Yourself ?

We Libertarians have a name for treasonous cowards like you. We call you flag-suckers.

Why don't you identify yourself? I always do:

"Freedon of speech, which you take for granted. Now, as a member of the majority of the public that supports the men and women in uniform, SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!"

What's going to happen if they don't "SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!"?

Freedom of speech is a natural right, born of man's nature, not the usurpation of the rights of others through military agression.

Instead of just mindlessly spouting venomous drivel, why don't you at least give a cursory view to the objective facts?

You do not "support" "the men and women in uniform". On the contrary, you stab them in the back by thoughtlessly supporting an indefensible war. Polls show those engaged in fighting it know, as do the majority of the American public, that the invasion was uncalled for.

It is the essence of patriotism to question authority, it's plain where that leaves you.

My identity

My identity has nothing to do with it. And how dare you say that I stab our soldiers in the back. I used to be one of them and many of them that I have talked to would do the same thing I would. Go over and fight with our brothers and sisters and not listen to the lunatic liberals who just want to put their tail between their legs and run. If you think that this war is indefensible, then I ask you to talk to the Kurd's who were slauthered by Hussein and company, or the Iranians who were mutilated by Hussein chemical weapons. The problem is that we, as the most powerful nation in the world did nothing when Hussein killed his own people, so don't talk to me about how unjust this war is. Talk to me why the liberal government at the time did nothing about the death of hundreds of thousands of Husseins own people. Why did we wait so long to take action? Oh right, we were busy getting our rocks off with our interns.

To anonymous:

Kurds were slaughtered by Hussein when they tried to overthrow him on the advice of GHWB. Iranians were mutilated by Hussein's chemical weapons that the US supplied. This nation did nothing when Hussein killed his own people because the administration at the time found him useful. Liberal government? Reagan and GHWB were in office at the time. Haven't you seen the photo of Rumsfeld making nice with Saddam Hussein? Why did we take so long to take action? Don't you remember Gulf War I, 12 years of sanctions, and no-fly zones?

Afraid to respond Bikemessenger!!!!! All you are is talk. Do something good for this country instead to talk down about it all the time. Have you ever served your country? Have you given over 20 years of your life to keep this country free? If you have then I do commend you and call you a brother even though we may not see eye to eye. If you have not done this, then I suggest that you shut the F*** UP!!!! Stop bitching and do something that is good for this country.

Dunce

Idiot Cindy Sheehan... the
sob
sister protesting the war at Bush's ranch, who lost her son in the war,
the same son she gave up in her divorce when he was 7 years old.

And by the way, if you wonder why she has so much free time ... she is
going through another divorce right now and guess what? She is giving
up
custody of another son.

As Forest Gump once wisely proclaimed, "Stupid is as stupid does."
