Congressman John Conyers Betrays the American People
By Medea Benjamin, www.CommonDreams.org
I remember before the 2006 election being at a fundraiser in Los Angeles for the Democratic Party when one of the featured guests was Rep. John Conyers. The issue of impeachment came up and the crowed roared in approval when Conyers said that if the Democrats took control of Congress, he would become head of the powerful House Judiciary Committee and would initiate impeachment proceedings. That, he said, was one of the reasons why it was so important to go all out to get Democrats elected.
Fast forward to July 23, 2007. About 300 of us gathered at Arlington Cemetery, convened by peace mom Cindy Sheehan, to march to Cong. Conyers office to demand that seven months after coming to power, he fulfill his promise about initiating impeachment proceedings. Shouting “Conyers, Conyers need a reason? Torture, lies, war and treason,” the angry crowd packed the halls outside the Congressman’s office while Cindy, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and former Conyers’ protégé Reverend Yearwood met with the Congressman inside.
A hour later, they emerged stone-faced and disillusioned. Cindy said that Conyers had told them that “impeachment isn’t going to happen because we don’t have the votes” and that “our only recourse was to work to get a Democrat in the White House.” The crowd booed and 45 people sat down inside and outside Conyers’ office. They were arrested by the Capitol Police as the supporters shouted “Shame on Conyers” and “Arrest Bush and Cheney, not the peacemakers.”
While the arrestees were being booked, about 40 activists visited the office of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. We know that from the day she became Speaker, the Congresswoman has insisted that impeachment was off the table. She has refused to support H. Res. 333, the bill introduced by Cong. Dennis Kucinich to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney for high crimes and misdemeanors. With 13 co-sponsors, the resolution is destined to languish without ever coming to a vote, thanks to both Conyers and Pelosi.
We told Pelosi’s chief of staff, Terry McCullough, that it was totally irresponsible for the Speaker to say that impeachment was off the table. When her chief-of-staff replied that the Speaker’s priority was ending the war, not impeachment, we all insisted that the two were intertwined and certainly not mutually exclusive. We also reminded her that the people of Pelosi’s district were overwhelmingly in favor of impeachment, and that they would start looking to newly announced candidate Cindy Sheehan for representation.
The arrest of impeachment activists and their forcible eviction from Conyers’ office today is proof of the bankruptcy of the two-party system. It is shameful that Conyers and Pelosi are putting their perceived interests of their party above the Constitution, which clearly makes impeachment the remedy for dealing with presidential “high crimes and misdemeanors”. With the Democratic leadership refusing to rein in an administration run amok, it is crystal clear that we, the people, must uphold the Constitution. People’s power, like the kind in evidence today in the normally solemn halls of Congress, is our only hope.

Heart of the matter
Cindy has always been really good at uncovering the truth.
I expect she will do the same when she is in congress.
Can the people of this country have been betrayed any more completely? The two party lie has hurt us all more than enough.
Stand with Cindy.
UNSEAT CONYERS, JR.
Robert E. Fisher, MSW
I have encouraged the National Lawyers Guild of Detroit and Michigan to sponsor a BLACK candidate with name recognition and community support to challenge & unseat Conyers, Jr. in 2008, for over 6 months. I employ THE LAWYERS GUILD TO FOLLOW UP !!! Conyers, Jr. is a slippery lying SOB, FULL OF SHIT, and an "UNCLE TOM."

Can the outrage be turned into action?
I fear running a Dem to unseat Conyers is a fool's errand. Do you have a short list of candidates who might challenge him as an Independent? In oreder to work Their Will, the Wayne County voters deserve a real choice in the General Election, not in a primary race.
Congress is aiding and abetting criminality.
Refusing to Impeach Bush and Cheney leaves the PARDON on the table. This encourages more law breaking. Congress is aiding and abetting criminality.
Please Keep This In Mind ...
When Congress aids and abets the criminal behavior of this current adminstration by not moving to impeach the prime architect of this behavior, namely, Dick Cheney, not only have they given their wholehearted blessing to criminal behavior, but it also signifies three other things which should be kept in mind ...
1.) Congress agrees with the "we're above the law" mindset which permeates this administration. Because this administration sees itself as being above the law, the members of Congress have an excuse to shirk off its sworn obligation to enforce the law and protect the American people.
2.) The moral corruption of America has reached its absolute nexus when we have an administration which boldly engages in criminal activities against the Constitution and the American people without a pang of conscience or remorse, and a Congress which has given its' approval to unrestrained, unprosecuted lawlessness. This also demnonstrates the deep contempt which the members of Congress have for the American people. As far as many of the members of Congress are concerned, the American people are important only at election time, and between elections, it doesn't matter how the American people are treated by the current administration or what happens to them when they become victims of this current administration's criminal machine.
3.) The failure of Congress to fulfill their solemn oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution" sets a dangerous precedent for future Congresses and Presidential administrations to follow. Future Congresses and Presidential administrations will be able to engage in the most hideous kinds of criminal acts with boldness and audacity, smugly secure in the knowledge that they will never have to face the day of reckoning at the bar of justice, and they won't be held accountable for their actions.
Perhaps the Democratic members of Congress are refusing to go after the criminal apparatus which has been set up by Cheney/BushCo because their mouths are watering at the thought of having access to the powerful criminal apparatus which is already in place, which is why they're plugging away for the 2008 elections. They want to seize the power of the criminal machine and use it to benefit themselves and their Wall Street/Anglo-Dutch banker-patrons at the expense of the Constitution and the American people.
The "unitary executive" is a dangerous way to govern, no matter which political party has access to it. That's why impeachment is a necessity, in order to dismantle and destroy the criminal machine which Cheney/BushCo have set up.
BINGO, Stephie!
VERY well-writen. And reasoned; I couldn't agree more!
Coincidentally, I just posted some of the same line of thought in another thread.

May I remind that Ms. Benjamin
threw her considerable political weight to John Kerry in 2004, turning her back on independent candidates, as I recall.
"The arrest of impeachment activists and their forcible eviction from Conyers’ office today is proof of the bankruptcy of the two-party system," Benjamin says.
Wasn't there enough "proof" of the corruption, complicity and collaboration by the Democratic Party Leadership with the anti-democratic forces in Washington, New York and LA before 2004?
We really can't stand any more dithering on this.
Medea, bless your heart... I know Conyers broke it yesterday
We stand beside you Medea...What great shadow has been cast over our man John? I hope and pray Conyers sees the light again, AND SOON!

Sorry I wasn't there with you
Of course, it seems to me that the incompetence and dishonesty of the Bush administration should make them all just want to resign and go home and hide, saving us all the trouble of impeachment. However, as bizarre as it may seem, they aren't willing to just leave, so we are obligated to go through all this. It just proves a theory of mine, which is that once people have obtained power, their only real goal from that point forward will be to maintain power.
I look forward to seeing you soon,
peace,
jim
There's something about Hearts of Darkness. ...
...Rivers run out of them, and torch-carrying Kurtzs go up those rivers and over the edge. Conrad had his up the Congo, and had to send Marlow after him. Coppola put his up the Mekong, and sent Martin Sheen. Our Chambers of Commerce sent theirs up the Potomac, but who's going to get him?
Well, it's clear by now that it's not going to be Pelosi, or Conyers. Cindy and Dennis are up for the 'mission' if only they could get the traction.
Come on, America, before it's too late!
