175+ BUSINESSES, ORGANIZATIONS, ACTIVISTS URGE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO JOIN HOUSE RENEWABLE ENERGY & ENERGY EFFICIENCY CAUCUS
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY NETWORK
WASHINGTON DC -- In a letter sent today, 176 businesses, organizations,
and individual activists called upon Members of Congress who have not yet
joined the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE/EE) Caucus to
do so.
The House RE/EE Caucus, which includes 217 Members of Congress
representing 44 states, the District of Columbia, and two territories, was
founded more than a decade ago to serve as a bi-partisan, non-legislative
source of information on sustainable energy technologies.
The letter's signers, which include 145 businesses and organizations as
well as 31 individuals, noted that renewable energy technologies now
contribute almost 8 percent of the nation's energy supply while energy
efficiency investments made during the past three decades now save more
than any single energy source.
"These technologies help to curb reliance on energy imports and lessen
energy costs thereby enhancing both national and homeland security," they
wrote. "They also improve the reliability of the nation's electrical
grid, and - perhaps most importantly - reduce the production of greenhouse
gases and other pollutants from traditional energy sources that contribute
to global warming and a host of other environmental problems."
The letter added that "the renewable energy and energy efficiency
industries include thousands of domestic companies that are providing an
ever-growing number of jobs in every state and community in the United
States."
Accordingly, the letter's signers are targeting those Members who have not
yet joined, accounting for about one-half of the U.S. House of
Representatives, and urging them to become members of the House RE/EE
Caucus. Current non-members include a number of prominent congressional
leaders from both parties:
Democrats:
* Xavier Becerra (CA) - Assistant to the Speaker
* John Dingell (MI) - Chair, Committee on Energy & Commerce
* Rahm Emanuel (IL) - Democratic Caucus Chair
* Tim Holden (PA) - Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit,
Energy & Research
* Steny Hoyer (MD) - Majority Leader
* Nick Lampson (TX) - Chair, Science & Technology Subcommittee on Energy &
Environment
* David R. Obey (WI) - Chair, Committee on Appropriations
* Peter J. Visclosky (IN) - Chair, Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy &
Water Development
Republicans:
* Joe Barton (TX) - Ranking Member, Committee on Energy & Commerce
* Roy Blunt (MO) - Minority Whip
* John A. Boehner (OH) - Minority Leader
* Phil Gingrey (GA) - Ranking Member, Science & Technology Subcommittee on
Technology & Innovation
* Ralph M. Hall (TX) - Ranking Member, Committee on Science & Technology
* David L. Hobson (OH) - Ranking Member, Appropriations Subcommittee on
Energy & Water Development
* Jerry Lewis (CA) - Ranking Member, Committee on Appropriations
* Frank D. Lucas (OK) - Ranking Member, Agriculture Subcommittee on
Conservation, Credit, Energy & Research
A corresponding letter will be sent later this month to the Members of the
U.S. Senate who have not yet joined the Senate RE/EE Caucus.
The full text of the letter and list of signers is attached
(SEN.Letter_02_07_08.doc). Also attached are a list of the current
members of the House RE/EE Caucus (Caucus_List_110th.doc) and a list of
the non-members of the House RE/EE Caucus
(Members_NOT_in_Caucus_List_1105y.doc).

THE HOUSE RENEWABLE ENERGY & ENERGY EFFICIENCY CAUCUS
February 7, 2008
Attn: Energy Policy Staff Person
Dear Representative:
We the undersigned 176 business, environmental, consumer, faith-based, energy policy research, and other organizations are writing to urge you to become a member of the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE/EE) Caucus.
The RE/EE Caucus is a non-legislative, bipartisan organization created to promote greater awareness among Members of Congress of the status, potential, and policy options for promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy (i.e., biomass/biofuels, geothermal, solar, water power, and wind) technologies.
It presently includes 217 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and is co-chaired by Representatives Mark Udall (D-CO) and Zach Wamp (R-TN) with Representatives Vern Ehlers (R-MI), Ron Kind (D-WI), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Greg Walden (R-OR) serving as vice-chairs.
The RE/EE Caucus has served as an excellent forum for the exchange of information on the cross-section of sustainable energy technologies. It regularly provides its members with announcements of related events of interest and a weekly compilation of news stories reporting on energy efficiency and renewable energy developments around the country.
In addition, it has worked with numerous organizations such as the Environmental & Energy Study Institute and the Sustainable Energy Coalition to sponsor an on-going series of congressional briefings and other events on a cross-section of energy policy issues.
Renewable energy presently provides almost 8 percent of the nation's domestic energy production while technologies such as wind, biofuels, and photovoltaics are among the nation's fastest growing sources of energy supply. In addition, thanks to measures implemented over the past three decades, energy efficiency now saves more energy annually (40 quads) and contributes more value to the U.S. economy and the environment than any single energy source (e.g., oil, natural gas, coal, or nuclear).
Combined, the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries include thousands of domestic companies that are providing an ever-growing number of jobs in every state and community in the United States. These technologies help to curb reliance on energy imports and lessen energy costs thereby enhancing both national and homeland security. They also improve the reliability of the nation's electrical grid, and - perhaps most importantly - reduce the production of greenhouse gases and other pollutants from traditional energy sources that contribute to global warming and a host of other environmental problems.
We believe that you share our interest in tapping the potential of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies to improve the domestic economy, enhance security, and protect the environment. Therefore, we encourage you to become a member of the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus.
To join, please contact Wendy Adams in the office of U.S. Representative Mark Udall at Wendy.Adams@mail.house.gov or 202-225-2161.
We look forward to working with you on this important issue during the coming year.
