But First We Need a Majority
By David Swanson
Some say we can't push impeachment until after non-Republicans win a majority in Congress.
This makes no sense, because first we need a reason to vote the Democrats a majority.
You don't get a majority without offering people a reason to vote you one. 85 percent of Democrats want candidates who stand for impeachment. Look at these polls.
Maybe we need a non-Republican majority in order to impeach. Maybe we don't. But it's only by pushing impeachment that we can get one.
Let's keep straight which is the cart and which is the donkey.
It is not a waste of time to push popular positions without any guarantee or even likelihood they'll succeed. It is the only way to make them eventually succeed. And that includes: it is the only way to change the political balance.
Why should the Dems push futile proposals on education, energy, the war, and every other issue, but not push a futile proposal on impeachment? If you're going to declare everything futile, then they should just go home until someone miraculously gives them a majority.
OR, they could fight for what people want them to fight for, and provide us a reason to vote them a majority.
If we elect people who have not been forced to campaign on impeachment, they'll immediately tell us that 2008 is just around the corner and impeachment would be silly now
Also, as Bob Fertik has noted: When Democrats win the House and/or Senate, George Bush and Dick Cheney will continue their policy of treating Congress as if it doesn't exist. They will lie their way through oversight hearings, refuse subpoenas for documents, and ignore laws passed by Congress they don't like. There is only one thing Democratic majorities will be able to do to stop the Bush-Cheney dictatorship - to impeach them both.

You can take action now
I take another view. Action does not depend on who has the majority; rather, action can start now.
The simple approach is to simply discuss this issue with your friends: Is the President fit to remain in office; and what is to be done to protect this constitution.
It doesn't have to be answered yes or no now; rather, the voters have nine months to watch what is going on, and decide who they are willing to trust to protect the constitution.
Maybe the RNC is going to turn around, and assert the rule of law; maybe the DNC will ignore whether the are or are not popular, and work with the states to force a vote on impeachment.
At this point, what's clear is there are insufficient rules mandating congress assert the rule of law. What could be done is simply raise the standards. [Sample Congressional Code of Conduct: The RNC has no plan Click ]
The states need to discuss this. Yes, the Constitution gives the power to the House to make the rules for their chamber; but the States do have a voice and a vote on whether the Constitution will be enhanced and strengthened.
Don't want until "something might happen" before you speak out. Act now. Let other know your friends in your state can do something. All you have to do is choose to speak out and be determined. Here's where there is progress on the state proclamations calling for Congress to vote up or down: [ Click ] There is also a State Proclamation Archive; Click here to read other content in the State Proclamation Archive.
The RNC already has a majority -- and that majority has failed.
