Can Congress End the War?

From Tomdispatch today, David Swanson's timely "Can Congress End the War? Democratic Leaders May Prefer to Claim They Tried but Failed"

Nothing reminds us more of how much the American constitutional system has been transformed, of just how extreme the "imperial presidency" has become, than Congress's generally woeful record in recent decades in exerting any significant control over, or putting the brakes on White House wars abroad. The imperial presidency has regularly run circles around an ever weaker Congress. Now, once again, we find ourselves at a moment where the public seems increasingly eager for a new Democratic Congress to rein in an out-of-control White House and its catastrophic policies, this time in the Middle East.

At Tomdispatch today, David Swanson, the Washington Director of Democrats.com and co-founder of the AfterDowningStreet.org coalition, explores the crucial questions as maneuvering in Congress about the war in Iraq intensifies: What might the new Democratic Congress be willing to do when it comes to Iraq? What is it actually capable of doing? If it does manage to act in any half-significant way, will the Bush White House simply ignore it? And can Bush's war in time become the Democrats' war, if Congress doesn't act?

After a thorough exploration of the issues at stake and the moves presently underway in Congress, Swanson concludes with a warning:

"In the meantime, the Democrats' strategy of letting the war continue, not thoroughly investigating the fraud that launched it, and not holding the war-makers accountable may prove not to be the electoral winner that Party figures like Emanuel expect. It might even prove a political equalizer and so a loser in 2008 or beyond. Every day that the Democrats don't move to end the war in Iraq is another day in which that war, stretching ever on, can become the Democrats' war. Only if they come to believe that the war's unpopularity will work against them in the voting booths in 2008 or thereafter will they be strongly motivated to take the sorts of actions that might actually bring it to an end."

This is a strong and provocative piece. Don't miss it.

pledgetoimpeach.org - UNITE !

It is imperative that ALL groups UNITE. Join PledgeToImpeach.org http://pledgetoimpeach.org/ Ask your fellow activists & groups to sign this Pledge-To-Strike! Send reps from ALL our Groups to show Congress WE DEMAND the REPRESENTATION of WE the PEOPLE - or else!

Petitions seldom get results; Sit-ins are disregarded and get people arrested; Letters are confiscated by Homeland 'security' as possibly 'dangerous' & are never seen by politicians; Phone calls are merely logged by fileclerks; Marching around in the streets isn't the least bit effective now that the Media controls 99% of the news! Even very large Protests become mostly localized news items - an 'invisible' waste of time and effort. Besides which, protesters are now required to march behind barriers and/or in "designated-'safe' areas" and with police escorts keeping them inside boundaries !!

I don't understand why all the Activists/Protesters cannot realize that the only way to accomplish anything in TODAY's suppressed America is by ALL the protest groups performing some SINGLE, unified, cohesive, monolithic, one-at-a-time actions. (???) Read this http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Feb07/Zingh27.htm

We should all be working 'full time' on the http://pledgetoimpeach.org/ThePlan.html -- sign up those in your groups, 'table' somewhere to pass out http://pledgetoimpeach.org/ThePledge.html all across America, on sidewalks, in front of stores, on campus - wherever there's a crowd.

Meanwhile, we should all make an effort to support the April 15th to 22 Boycott. Let's make it a whopping sucess! Also take the opportunity to pick up more pledges to strike.
The National Boycott week is a precursor for the Pledge to Strike campaign which goes BEYOND the Boycott - we hope to have enough pledges that we can send individual representatives from ALL Groups to the Floor of Congress to DEMAND that they represent "We The People" to stop the war and make it impossible for BushCo to engage in the PNAC goal of World Domination and permanent warfare... OR we will call in the pledges and put the country in economic limbo... Give Corporate Congress a hit in the pocketbook!

The politicians who agree with impeachment and really want to stop the war are obviously AFRAID to take up the People's Mandate! Greed and Ego go hand in hand - they can see the handwriting on the White House wall, and they don't want to jeopardize their comfortable lifestyles. Corporate power owns politicians. Unless we break that hold, it is a deathgrip on we-the-people!

When we get enough of the groups together, it WILL be feasible to remind Congress that this is a Govmt OF the People, BY the People and For the People! Send http://pledgetoimpeach.org to your Unions, (that BushCo wants to crush!) Unions surely will insure it will work. We ALL can prepare ahead to stay home -no driving, no shopping, no school, no work, no eating out - we'll try Mom's reciepes, catch up on reading, watch dvd's, play board games with the kids. I love the idea because it is 100% NONVIOLENT - nobody can be arrested for staying home with the flu... :-)

Anthony St Martin, who planned this, doesn't ask for anything except volunteers to insert the http://pledgetoimpeach.org url in the classifieds of local papers, use free internet ads, contact other Protest Groups, work on uniting us all... (no donations necessary)

Meanwhile, let's ALL participate in the April 15-22 Boycott http://www.wearenotbuyingit.org/volunteer.html and begin today collecting Pledges!

Iraq Isn't Just The Democrats' War ...

it's also the Republicans war and the Anglo-Dutch oligarchy's war, and all of these groups realize that they'll have a lot to lose if the war is brought to an end.

So, the Democrats and Republicans are going to delay and defer doing something about the war until the country's financial resources are completely bankrupted, and the American people have been rendered impotent and completely demoralized.

The imperial presidency can hoodwink, bamboozle and run rings around Congress, because Congress is owned by the same Anglo-Dutch oligarchical interests which also own the current imperial presidency, and Congress shares the same mindset and worldview of the Anglo-Dutch oligarchy, so Congressional Democrats and Republicans aren't going to act on the will of we, the people.

So ... whether we like it or not, we're faced with two choices -- either we get up off the couch, take to the streets and use every non-violent means at our disposal (from nationwide shopping boycotts to peaceful weekly protests in front of government offices) to give both sides of the Congressional aisle a sharp, firm kick in the butt to get them to follow through on the Nov. 7th mandate to end the war and impeach Cheney and G.W., or we can continue to sit on our hands, go along with the status quo and do nothing while America's place in the world is crushed ... perhaps irreparably.
