DETROIT -- The Detroit City Council on Wednesday joined about two dozen cities and towns nationwide calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The resolution states the president and vice president "conspired with others to defraud the United States of America by intentionally misleading Congress and the public regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war"

The resolution was co-sponsored by President Pro Tem Monica Conyers and Councilwoman JoAnn Watson.

"It is designed to send a message on a national level that the Detroit City Council feels the actions of the president are impeachable," said Sam Riddle, Conyers' spokesman. "Especially since it appears that so many had to die for a lie."

The resolution passed 8-0; Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel was absent. The resolution is identical to those passed by elected officials in San Francisco and a slew of other smaller cities, as well as political action groups and town councils.

A full copy of the resolution, including a full list of supportive government and political groups, is available at http://www.impeachpac.org/resolutions-list.
