41 Congress Members Publicly for Impeachment
By David Swanson
Forty-one Congress Members now stand in one manner or another for impeachment.
Seventeen have signed on as cosponsors of H. Res. 333, a bill proposing articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney. H Res 333 cosponsors include, Dennis Kucinich, Jan Schakowsky, Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, Keith Ellison, Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, Albert Wynn, William Lacy Clay, Yvette Clarke, Jim McDermott, Jim Moran, Bob Filner, Sam Farr, Robert Brady, Tammy Baldwin, Donald Payne.
Twenty-five have signed onto H Res. 589, a bill proposing the impeachment of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The cosponsors are Jay Inslee, Xavier Becerra, Michael Arcuri, Ben Chandler, Dennis Moore, Bruce Braley, Tom Udall, Earl Blumenauer, Peter DeFazio, Hank Johnson, Steve Cohen, Keith Ellison, David Wu, Yvette Clarke, Darlene Hooley, Betty McCollum, Timothy Bishop, Barney Frank, Carolyn Maloney, Ed Perlmutter, Tammy Baldwin, Shelley Berkley, Raul Grijalva, Ed Pastor, Ellen Tauscher.
Only Johnson, Ellison, Clarke, and Baldwin have signed onto both bills. (17 + 25 -4 = 38)
Congressmen Jesse Jackson Jr. and Maurice Hinchey have recently said that they support the impeachment of Cheney and Bush, but have not yet signed onto any bills. (38 + 2 = 40)
Other Congress Members have said privately that they favor impeachment but not these bills, even that they would only support impeachment if it included Bush. The lack of cross-over support between the two existing bills is an indication of the importance of petty personal politics within Congress, and the extent to which Congress Members will sign onto a bill based on who the sponsor and cosponsors are and who asks them, and whether anyone asks them, to sign on.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has opposed impeachment since May 2006, but this week said that if she were not the Speaker she would probably be backing impeachment, and that impeachment of Gonzales is clearly merited. (40 + 1 = 41)

Missed Opportunity re Impeachment
Dear David,
Thank you for all of the great work that you have been doing on this issue. Unfortunately we just missed a major opportunity; but I believe that we can probably go back and pick it up again. Representative Conyers said, just a few days before the confrontation, that:
"We need to have three Members of Congress from anywhere come and say, 'Congressman, if you... if you are willing to support an inquiry into a resolution of whether there had been acts of impeachability conducted by, the Vice President of, and the President of the United States, that could lead to High Crimes and Misdemeanors, then we will join you if you introduce such a resolution.'"
Conyers was not saying that he wouldn’t support a Resolution of Impeachment, just that he wanted to start with a Hearing of Inquiry as to whether there really were grounds to impeach.
In other words, Conyers was just telling us that we were missing a step. We do not have enough support yet for impeachment; but if we will get 3 congress people to come speak to him and work with him, then he would open an inquiry leading to a resolution of impeachment, if there are in fact grounds for it – which we of course know there are – and Conyers would prove it.
This would be perfect. The inquiry would give us the time and public attention needed to build the case and support for impeachment; it gives Conyers the spotlight; he could do what he does best which is build a public case which is in fact the purview of the Judiciary Committee; it would likely give us an opportunity to broaden the case for impeachment much beyond what Kucinich has included; and Kucinich could of course present the evidence he has collected in the inquiry and continue to build support for the particular Resolution which he has introduced.
And in fact, as Lou Dubose said in a Washington Spectator article that you posted, Nixon’s impeachment started with a Hearing of Inquiry and not with a Resolution.
So, in short, we ought to go get a couple of congresspeople and talk to Conyers again, privately, and see if he will in fact open such a hearing of inquiry; and if so then develop a strategy for taking this forward in a more productive manner based on that premise.
As you noted the other day, Congressman Donald Payne signed on to the Resolution just because you asked him to and I bet there are plenty more that would too once the Hearing of Inquiry gets under way.
Please talk to the other Impeachment leaders right away and then go talk to your Congressional supporters and Conyers. I bet you will be able to turn things around and get Conyers on board, full steam ahead. Especially with all of the other things that have occurred during the last couple of weeks.
Thank you for all of the great work that you have been doing on this matter. I would love to read your response. Thanks,
Rob Wheeler

I spoke with conyers'
staff yesterday. He has no interest whatsoever in impeachment. Picking out one of his public statements and latching onto it as gospel is nonsensical, when there is no consistency among his statements. You and he and everyone else knows full well that we'd all favor an investigation into inmpeachment, and most people know it's a difference that doesn't make any difference since an impeachment is an investigation.
No interest, even with "the three scenario"?
This turn of events breaks millions of American hearts, and continues to boggle the minds of billions around the world about the current state of America.
Did Conyer's staff elaborate as to WHY he has no more interest in impeachment, David? We all have a right to know WHY our nation is going to hell in a hand-basket!

Bush Cheney impeachment TV show
Due to popular demand, PBS TV stations are reshowing the July 13, 2007 Bill Moyers Journal show about why Bush & Cheney should be impeached.
Watch for the show on your PBS station coming next week, the week of Monday, Aug 6, 2007. A very compelling show. Or watch it online or read the show's transcript at: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/07132007/profile.html
A quote from the show below:
"A public opinion poll from the American Research Group recently reported that more than four in ten Americans — 45% — favor impeachment hearings for President Bush and more than half — 54% — favored impeachment for Vice President Cheney.
Unhappiness about the war in Iraq isn't the only cause of the unsettled feelings of the electorate. Recent events like President Bush's pardoning of Scooter Libby, the refusal of Vice President Cheney's office to surrender emails under subpoena to Congress and the President's prohibition of testimony of former White House counsel Harriet E. Miers in front of the House Judiciary Committee have caused unease over claims of "executive privilege." In addition, many of the White House anti-terror initiatives and procedures — from the status of "enemy combatants" in Guantanamo to warrantless wiretapping — have come under legal scrutiny in Congress and the courts."
