In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way.
I believe I could have handled the situation without interruption, but again I do not know what warnings or other exchanges transpired between the young man and the police prior to his barging to the front of the line and their intervention.
I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of answering him when he was taken into custody.
I was not aware that a taser was used until after I left the building. I hope that neither the student nor any of the police were injured.
I regret enormously that a good healthy discussion was interrupted.
Well, what about posting an answer to the young man's question, if you can't stomach a straight apology for allowing the cops to torture him?

The law enforcement heroes have struck again - literally. Just think if the student had insisted on an explanation for law enforcement crimes in America - surreptitious home entries, mail intercepts, fraudulent arrests, etc.

I'm shocked by what happened. People stood by and ignored the man as the police hauled him away - simply because he stood in front of microphone asking questions? Since when is speaking a crime? How could Kerry not have noticed, and why did he not at least stop to ask what was going on? Presumably because he didn't care - it wasn't his kid. I can understand why others in the audience would be afraid to question the actions of the police - but a senator? Talk about "the banality of evil." The incident is chilling.
Police injured??
Exactly how likely was it that the police would be injured in this incident? The student had a book, and the police -- four of them, I think -- had a taser at the very least. Why were the police after this student in the first place? Is it illegal now to ask speakers questions on college campuses?
