April 24, 2007: U.S. Representative Kucinich of Ohio introduced articles of impeachment against V.P. Cheney.

December 14, 2007: U.S. Representative Wexler of Florida announced a web page, WexlerWantsHearings dot com, where people could sign on to indicate their desire for hearings to begin on the Cheney impeachment articles.

January 15, 2008: On the floor of the House, Wexler, a member of the House Judiciary Committee - where the articles of impeachment against Cheney had been sent and which controls whether or not there will be hearings - called for hearings to begin, referring to the list of names as an indication many Americans wanted hearings to take place.

June 9, 2008: Kucinich introduced 35 articles of impeachment against President Bush. That resolution also awaits hearings in the House Judiciary Committee. Wexler, the first to co-sponsor the 35 articles, changed his web page to call for hearings for Bush as well as Cheney.

July 15, 2008: Kucinich's H. Res. 1345 for a single Article of Impeachment related to the Iraq war..

July 25, 2008: In the HJC a non-impeachment hearing was held in which impeachment was discussed.

Previous updates and Why change the location again

Wexler Petition Updates prior to #9 were posted as separate comments under Forum Topics "Wexler's goal may not be reached" and then later "Wexler may reach his goal". Though there would be no value in looking at the updates themselves now, interspersed among them are interesting comments by many people pertaining to Wexler's request for a list of names, his effort and that of his partners on the Judiciary Committee - and pertaining to other topics.

The idea of changing the location once again is to stop cluttering this site with separate updates - instead edit it as a Forum Discussion Topic every day. Hope it works. Apologies for so many changes. Hopefully it will be the last.

According to an announcement on www.impeachbushcheney.net there will be an impeachment debate between conservative Bruce Fein, who is FOR, and liberal Democrat Michael Tomasky, who is AGAINST. It will be at the Carrboro Century Center in CARRBORO, N.C. beginning at 7p.m. UNC Professor of Leadership and Public Policy, W. Hodding Carter III will moderate.

Wexler petition needs a big, big boost

Well, we are running out of excuses. The games, the partying, the hangovers, and the caucuses are over. Will it get better when the kids go back to school, or worse?

As can be seen from the Wexler Petition Update above the daily 24 hour totals have fallen every day for seven days in a row (except for yesterday when the total went up by a huge 16 names). Today's total is the lowest since Christmas Eve, 11 days ago.

We are now in danger of not even reaching 200,000 - which would be 50,000 short of the goal!

Tampering with Wexler site?

This is as slow as it has ever been. Can it be that there is no further interest out there to impeach Cheney?! There is now more media out there about this petition than there has ever been. I think that something is awry. I've been posting the www.wexlerwantshearings.com URL on different websites this morning and I know others are, too. ... something smells.

There were only two hundred new signers in a 4-hour period this morning. The petition has been averaging 1,000 signers per hour up until recently (I have data if anyone is interested)! So, that's from 1,000 per hour to 50 per hour. Drastic drop-off! Statistically suspicious -- i.e., that the reduction is caused by chance.

btw,,,, I was on Wexler's website today and could not find a link to the petition page. There were links buried within articles, but I didn't see a direct link to the www.wexlerwantshearings.com website. Perhaps I just missed it.

Webmaster and server provider should know

Their webmaster and the company that owns their server should be able to figure out whether blocking or some other problem is occurring.

Since we are talking about impeachment of Cheney, the technical staff of Wexler's web site should assume that there are a lot of enemies out there who have already tried, may be trying now, and will be trying in the coming days to mess with that site.

It might even be that the reason for the high numbers after Christmas was that someone was stuffing names into the site to inflate the numbers so that at the right time, about Jan 15, it could be discovered that a lot of supporters of hearings were actually fake. (I prefer to believe that that was the time a lot of people were connecting up on the internet.)

It is up to the tech staff to keep that from happening. They had better be very, very good because Cheney and Rove, now with nothing better to do, can afford the very best.

Well, thanks. However, it had crossed my mind that Wexler might have realized that he got in over his head. I was rather surprised today to NOT find a (direct) link to the petition on his website. .... unfortunately I've come around to this thinking as a result of the current regieme. Perhaps Wexler would prefer that we NOT make the 250,000 mark. ... at this rate, we won't.

I have not done a 'true' analysis of these data; however, this slow-down is consistent. In other words, there are no peak times v. slow times; it's all slow. .... very curious.

The trend is still down. Now it looks like we won't make even 200,000 which would be more than 50,000 short of what was asked for by Wexler and the others.

Forgive if this is not techie-correct jargon, but when Wexler bought the Petition ad to be seen by people who google Cheney , did that open a can of worms? Do hackers have more access to an ad on Google than if the Petition ad was not on Google's results page (after googling Cheney) at all?

Yankhadenuf, it shouldn't make any difference. It is just a link to a page. But I am not exactly up-to-date on all the technicalities.

I do hope the Wexler web site people have superb security because we know there will be some very aggressive attacks on that site.

To Harry and all, please contact the Wexler contact page (link above) and let them know that you are aware the numbers on the Petition have suddenly dropped after it was googled. It may be as simple a matter of letting their webmaster know !

Also , please request that there be a TV ad for the Petition (and quick fundraiser online to get it there fast)

Wow! Actually that's still an impressive number. I believe we are conditioned to think that everybody that would otherwise be available is using that web-link and asking for impeachment. There certainly has to be far more than our total list that has come to see this man for what he is, finding their way to a web-link isn't necessarily connected, or so I think.

And I also believe that nearly 190K names so far is more than sufficient reason for the powers to be to pursue the appropriate action, considering DENNIS KUCINICH has already knocked on the door in this regard.

And I further believe (this being my final note in this regard) is that failure to pursue this matter (with or without this ever-increasing number of supporting names) is nothing short of procrastination // it might even be considered avoidance. Ya think?

Thanks for these wonderful updates! I simply do not believe that interest in impeaching Cheney has dropped so significantly in the past week or so NOR do I believe that we have tapped out the number of people who want to see Cheney impeached.

Until I am proven wrong, I will continue to believe that the www.wexlerwantshearings.com website is being filtered and only a small number of petitioner signatures are being allowed through.

But the glass is MORE THAN TRIPLE FULL !!! :o)
