The Day After the Bombing of Iran
By David Swanson
Imagine yourself sitting down transfixed and watching video footage of U.S. bombs hitting Iran. You see children ripped limb from limb, mothers screaming and wailing, people panicked, tortured, traumatized, and killed. Imagine asking yourself at that point: What was I doing these past many months that I thought was more important than preventing this?
Now ask yourself today: What am I doing that is more important than ending the ongoing hell of the U.S. occupation of Iraq?
Are you struggling to support your family? So are many, many other people who still find hours and days to commit. While congress members and senators have the gall to tell constituents that opposing Pelosi or Reid and cutting off the funding lies outside their "comfort zone," citizens are going without sleep, ruining marriages and friendships, losing money, fasting, and risking serious jail time for nonviolent protests. Are those children hit by the bombs living within a "comfort zone"?
Are you working on an election campaign? Is that where you believe democratic activism belongs? Here are a few reasons to consider putting at least some of your energy into ending the occupation of Iraq right now: First, there is no good reason to believe votes will be honestly counted. Second, there are no candidates in the two big parties who intend to end the occupation quickly, but there might be one if the peace movement were larger - and that shift in policy would help that candidate win more than doing what he wants you to do would help. Third, a great many people will die unnecessary deaths during the next 10 months, and it is simply not true that Congress cannot prevent it. Any Senator can commit now to filibustering the funding, just as Senator Chris Dodd committed to filibustering telecom immunity. Any representative can commit now to voting No and to lobbying Pelosi not to bring the funding up for a vote. We elected them to do this in 2006, and if we do not hold them to it we will lose the power to elect anyone to do anything we want in 2008.
Are you working to pass federal legislation on an important issue that will benefit millions of people? That's sweet of you, but a complete waste of time. As I said in November of 2006, and as has proved true over 15 months: good bills will be vetoed, bad ones will become law, and mixed ones will have the good parts signing-statemented. Building momentum to pass your bill next year is all well and good, but there will be no money to pay for it if the occupation of Iraq continues. Were Congress to find the nerve to impeach, you might get your legislation turned into law this year. And I would ask you to close your eyes and look one more time at the dying children of Iran. If that doesn't work, open your eyes and look at these images from our occupation of Iraq: http://afterdowningstreet.org/image
Are you working to make change at the local or state level? Are you working to educate, to change our culture, to inject decency into the world of business? Are you providing direct assistance to people in need? By no means should you stop, but you will be stopped if global war results from the suicidal course our government is on. You will be stopped if global warming is not reversed. You will be stopped if the hatred for the United States that Bush and Cheney are developing around the world blows back at us in a violent form. You will have to live with the destroyed human beings who are veterans of U.S. military service in Iraq. And you will have to live with knowing that collectively we could very easily have prevented hundreds of thousands of deaths, and you didn't do your bit.
So, let's all do our share. Let's do it this week. Let's put an end to this murderous catastrophe right now and get on with the enormous task of building a peaceful and sustainable world.
So, what should you do? You should get involved in one of the events planned everywhere in the country on March 19th and surrounding days: http://resistinmarch.org

Are you serious about Iran?
I wish your comment was more about the people of Iran; what their contributions to world history have been; from Zoroaster to Cyrus the Great. Instead your just interested in bashing the US administration. Iran is not important to you, as much as discrediting the US is.
We need to remove the Seyyeds in Iran. There is a very simple method for removing the Seyyeds in Iran. Non violence and General Strikes must be encouraged by all in the world, in their support for the people of Iran. The Seyyeds know that their hands are tied, if the people of Iran did not "bake bread" for them.
What a lot of you folks do not realise, is that the Iranian people celebrate Nowrooz more than anything else. Apathy towards Islam is so strong that the Mullah dare not walk alone.
But what we need most are articles that show how people can non violently approach such a violent dogma. The Iranian Spirit as in The Zend Avesta and later in the Shahnameh has the hearts and minds of Iranians, who love life and celebrate it every year, especially so in defiance of the Seyyeds.
Please leave it to us to clean our house ourselves, and not use Iran as a tool to show anti Americanism or anti Israelism. Help Iranians help themselves with peaceful means.
gonna be harder to do
if the pentagon bombs the place flat dontcha think?
Iraq has contributed a lot to world history
And look at Iraq now. The fertile crescent and the Euphrates and Tigris. Look at Baghdad! One of the worst episodes in history is about Alexander the Great and his rape and pillage of these Eastern countries including Afghanistan and India. The leaders of these countries are those at fault ... not the peasants.

War is Over, If You Want It.
David -
Thanks for your sensitive, clear writing.
Working with Rep Betty Hall, I would like to share her push to end the war through Impeachment. She will address her colleagues in the NH House with the theme, Imagine Truth.
(HR24, date, still to be determined.)

Thank you, David - ditto
you are so very right, david
not only that, under cover of such an abominable act of brazen destruction, all over the other nations the last gasp of the neo-con blood shriek will attempt to re-arrange the furniture in every available domestic policy they can get their claws on.
the ferocity of the opposition to the President and his followers will extend forth with a will of its very own.
these war criminals, in their cacoon of mental deprivation and blood lust, are like the Nazi's before the surrender.
They will sacrifice their flanks to destroy all evidence.
Willaim Crystal, God bless this base villain, should be on a suicide watch. If he doesn't do it, Cheney will do it for him. Ask his closest friends.
There is no more room for compromise.
The Strike is all in place, and their personal nightmares must be such that they are visions of Damnation. They wake up, in denail, sweat pouring from everywhere.
They're so close to doing it.
That they have done it in their minds already over and over again.
They huddle togther to gather peer group pressure strength. They look at each other. It doesn't get a reaction.
This is the End. This is the final hour.
Iran
Apparently you don't understand the post. It's very cynical in that the Bush crime family is itching to bomb Iran, while most Americans are sitting on their asses and not trying to stop another illegal and unprovoked war from the war criminals in the White House.
Have you called your Congressperson and Senator to demand that they pass a bill to making the White House go before Congress before striking Iran?
If not, why not?
The problem is
Talking to this Congress is like talking to a deaf and blind man from afar -- only worse. They know we don't have time to deal with all their crimes. Why are they bailing out banks that lose money and not families who lose houses? What are they thinking?
If the people of Iran don't like their Mullahs, they don't have anything on us. At least their Mullahs are not attacking the whole world.
I can imagine the joy we will feel when our Constitution is restored. If the governor of NY has to resign over sex with a prostitute, why is Bush in the dirty house?
