This morning activists led by Code Pink carried a giant Constitution down Constitution Avenue to the National Archives and the Department of Justice. Outside the Department of Justice Jesselyn Radack spoke. She had not been back there since she worked there and blew the whistle on the denial of rights to John Walker Lindh. As we marched on Constitution Avenue, police shouted at us to get out of the street. I shot video and will post it tonight.
Last night at an event in DC, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers responded to a question about impeachment by treating it and our Constitution as a joke. Last year at the Take Back America conference, Conyers participated in a panel discussion on Bush and Cheney's abuses of power. The panel avoided impeachment, but the questions at the end didn't. This year, today in fact, at the Take Back America conference, Conyers participated in a similar panel and allowed no questions at the end. Conyers made one mention of impeachment and said it would ruin the upcoming election.
So, Bob Fertik, President of Democrats.com, spoke with Conyers' staffers, pointing out that an impeachment hearing on torture would compel John McCain to defend torture, etc. Ted Kalo, one of Conyers' staffers, claimed that an impeachment hearing might not overpower claims of executive privilege unless preceded by a vote in the full House calling for the hearing. But, of course, Congress did so vote in the full House back in November, voting to send Rep. Dennis Kucinich's resolution to the committee for a hearing. Conyers' staffers also believe, however, that Conyers needs a guarantee of a successful full House vote on impeachment prior to beginning hearings. But the hearings would do a great deal of good even if Conyers never chose to call a vote. And the vote would of course be different from any current whip count because of the impact of the hearings.
In other news, Senator Barack Obama went to the Constitution Center in Philadelphia and gave a speech suggesting he may not have actually read the Constitution. And the Take Back America conference is 98% devoted to electing Democrats.
UPDATE: I'm told that Conyers also said that going to war on Iran would be grounds for impeachment - something he also said a year and a half ago.
UPDATE 2: I listened to Obama's speech. He did a fine job re racism. He just mentioned the Constitution because of where he was. But he gave no indication of any awareness that the central rights and mechanisms of the Constitution have been destroyed.
