New National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq to Remain Secret?

As we noted earlier this month, the intelligence community has been working towards producing a new national intelligence estimate on Iraq, and it's likely to be completed in the next several weeks. It is also, unlike the last several NIEs on Iraq and last year's report on Iran, likely to be kept secret. The report, like the last two NIEs on Iraq, will take stock of the situation there -- both military and political.
That's because Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell thinks it's bad policy to release declassified versions of the reports' key judgments. It's part of his general philosophy that public debate about intelligence issues kills Americans.
So The Washington Post's Walter Pincus reports today that McConnell's deputy said that the NIE process is "getting a makeover by senior intelligence officials to improve its credibility" -- meaning that they want to make sure that no dodgy information (e.g. aluminum tubes) makes it in there.
Which is all well and good, but as Pincus points out, "these changes will be incorporated in the classified NIE on Iraq, but the public probably will not have a chance to judge them." Once the NIE is completed, the National Intelligence Board, of which McConnell is chairman, will decide whether to declassify anything for release. He's already said as a matter of policy that NIEs should be kept quiet. The Iran NIE -- which undercut the administration's public statements about Iran's nuclear capabilities -- was only released out of a fear that its contents would be leaked to the media.
It remains to be seen whether McConnell will have his way. The Hill has so far been quiet on whether there ought to be a declassified version. I put the question to the chairmen of the two intelligence committees -- Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) and Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) this morning, and I'll let you know what I hear.
Update: A spokesman for Sen. Rockefeller replies: “Our office won’t have any comment on the report until it is finished.”

My Congresswoman, Anna Eshoo (D-CA 14) is on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and on the Subcommittee on Intelligence Management. I wrote her:
"I urge you to make certain the declassified version on Iraq is publicly released.
The White House lied to get the U.S. into the Iraq War; and Congress has done nothing about it. It has been five years of war crimes against the Iraqi people, U.S. soldiers, and the American public; and Congress has done nothing to stop it. Now they intend to perpetuate the war by hiding the situation from the American public behind classified documents?
Why should the Congress do something to stop that? Because the Iraqi population overwhelmingly supports attacks against U.S. soldiers. And because of America's policy decisions, the Iraqis are justified in killing Americans in Iraq.
You have the influence to do something about it; do it!"

Repent, Repent, Ridiculous Right Wing, Hurry Before Jesus Comes
Thinking outside the box when a good friend of mine who is sadly a Republican made me feel guilty for being a Democrat.
He said to me, “ we can win win in Iraq, be part of the team, have faith, things are getting better!” As much as I wanted to believe him -I couldn't.
How can he say things are getting better when we just had three horrific attacks in three days?
Then I said to my self, “self, it is awful how this war has divided the country, although now, the majority are against it.”
So now for the sake of this great country of ours I will forget the folly of George Bush and his idiot advisers who got us in this five year wrong, disgraceful, devilish , oil war
and tax my faculties to get us out of this mess and end the crime of terrorism.
I know it is a momentous task but I have nothing more important to do.
Well ok, so how do we get out this mess and end the war on terror? It is clear that Iraq is a multi-ethnic artificially nation that only a evil dictator can rule.
So Partition is the best solution for Iraq: Kurdistan, Sunni Iraq, and a sad Shiite Iraq; you can't force people to live together or like each other. This transition will not be easy to accomplish with various problems in the way, so after the Partition map is made and agreed upon by the majority of parties involved and I say majority since you can never make every body happy, then we need to get rid of the various criminals that are the cause of the non-stop violence- the U.S. occupation is obviously a hindrance so the sooner we end it the better.
Other issues are the Turks wanting to kill the Kurds, the Iranians and more specifically the leadership in Iran wanting to see the U.S. demise, the Syrians, who want a piece of the pie.
We neither have the will or man power to police the world especially with a volunteer armed forces so we need to simplify our foreign policy, however we do have the technology to regulate the world. So next step to U.S. Success is to withdraw the majority of U.S. Forces and put them in a defensive stance to guard the USA.
We can leave some troops to guard our strategic interests and man drowns and inelegant weaponry although we can do it from any state, ths will regulate the world. Hence: the human defense and the electric offense! In other words, we have the technology to monitor the world in a new sense and in the normal sense we use the majority of our armed forces to guard our broken boarders, secure our ports, and strategic interests at home this is called killing two birds with one stone, use people to guard the home land and machines to attack abroad.
So the next time we have a problem like Saddam we just locate and blast him with a smart weapon, So big brother can watch the whole world and zap the bad guys when they open their mouths and bad mouth the United States Of America!
We also need to show the people of the world we are serious and this system works so we need to blast, the leaders of Iran, Venezuela, the Shiite Nation, the criminals in Dar fur, and north Korea.
The world or evil world won't know what hit them! So while we withdraw the majority of troops abroad we man these smart, weapons and watchful eye technologies.
So launch five cruise bombs or five million dollars to blast the enemies of the U.S.A, and the people or leaders threating us and there is your new world order, big brother is watching and if you mess with the U.S.A. We will locate and blast you! That will be our new G.P.S foreign policy and it will work and cost less, and we will be the loved leaders, and good guys once again.!
