General William Odom Tells Senate Rapid Withdrawal Is Only Solution

Two related audio files: Media conference call with StandUpCongress.org on April 1st. Radio show with ThePeopleSpeakRadio.net on March 17th. Testimony before Senate Commitee on Foreign Relations: Here's the PDF. TESTIMONY BEFORE THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE ON IRAQ 2 April 2008 Good morning Mr. Chairman and members of the committee. It is an honor to appear before you again. The last occasion was in January 2007, when the topic was the troop surge. Today you are asking if it has worked. Last year I rejected the claim that it was a new strategy. Rather, I said, it is a new tactic used to achieve the same old strategic aim, political stability. And I foresaw no serious prospects for success. I see no reason to change my judgment now. The surge is prolonging instability, not creating the conditions for unity as the president claims. Last year, General Petraeus wisely declined to promise a military solution to this political problem, saying that he could lower the level of violence, allowing a limited time for the Iraqi leaders to strike a political deal. Violence has been temporarily reduced but today there is credible evidence that the political situation is far more fragmented. And currently we see violence surge in Baghdad and Basra. In fact, it has also remained sporadic and significant in More disturbing, Prime Minister Maliki has initiated military action and then dragged in US forces to help his own troops destroy his Shiite competitors. This is a political setback, not a political No less disturbing has been the steady violence in the Mosul area, and the tensions in Kirkuk between Kurds, Arabs, and Turkomen. A showdown over control of the oil fields there surely awaits us. And the idea that some kind of a federal solution can cut this Gordian knot strikes me as a wild fantasy, wholly out of touch with Kurdish realities. Also disturbing is Turkey’s military incursion to destroy Kurdish PKK groups in the border region. That confronted the US government with a choice: either to support its NATO ally, or to make good on its commitment to Kurdish leaders to insure their security. It chose the former, and that makes it clear to the Kurds that the United States will sacrifice their security to its larger interests in Turkey. Turning to the apparent success in Anbar province and a few other Sunni areas, this is not the positive situation it is purported to be. Certainly violence has declined as local Sunni shieks have begun to cooperate with US forces. But the surge tactic cannot be given full credit. The decline started earlier on Sunni initiative. What are their motives? First, anger at al Qaeda operatives and second, their financial plight. Their break with al Qaeda should give us little comfort. The Let me emphasize that our new Sunni friends insist on being Now let us consider the implications of the proliferating deals This can hardly be called greater military stability, much less I challenge you to press the administration’s witnesses this week to explain this absurdity. Ask them to name a single historical How can our leaders celebrate this diffusion of power as To sum up, we face a deteriorating political situation with an The only sensible strategy is to withdraw rapidly but in good order. Only that step can break the paralysis now gripping US No quick reconciliation between the US and Iran is likely, but Withdrawal from Iraq does not mean withdrawal from the A number of reasons are given for not withdrawing soon and completely. I have refuted them repeatedly before but they have more lives than a cat. Let try again me explain why they don’t make First, it is insisted that we must leave behind military training Second, it is insisted that chaos will follow our withdrawal. We Third, nay sayers insist that our withdrawal will create regional instability. This confuses cause with effect. Our forces in Iraq and our threat to change Iran’s regime are making the region unstable. Those who link instability with a US withdrawal have it exactly backwards. Our ostrich strategy of keeping our heads buried in the sands of Iraq has done nothing but advance our enemies’ interest. I implore you to reject these fallacious excuses for prolonging the commitment of US forces to war in Iraq. Thanks for this opportunity to testify today. |

General Odam Speaks The Truth
As a former Naval Officer with a specialty in WMD's, I know that General Odam is absolutely right. Those that think otherwise are misinformed or still think the US should stay for OIL. The only thing George W. Bush ever got right is his "Mission Accomplished". The initial mission was accomplished--Saddam was dead-- and Bush should have removed the troops at that time, but he and Cheney wanted OIL---GET IT--OIL!!!
The life blood of Americans and our treasury are in Iraq only to give the Military Industrial complex more profit and the OIL MEN the Iraqi OIL RESERVES.
OUT NOW!!! IMMEDIATELY.
The Iraqi's want us out NOW and the majority of Americans want us out NOW!!!
Webb mentioned Gen. Odom
two or three times with support during questioning I just finished watching on replay on CSpan. Good for Sen. Webb.
So Senator Webb would be a good person to ask to filibuster the 100+billion funding coming up, since recent Obama statements reveal he just doesn't understand (not likely) or refuses to accept the reality of the futility of further occupation to the US soldiers and the many, many Iraqis.
Obama does understand
No one in their right mind would remove 100% of the troops all at once. The US invaded Iraq illegally and irresponsibly. We must withdraw with the least amount of additional harm to the Iraqi people. I'm sure Gen. Odom would agree with Obama's plan.

Obama's VP Choice
Sen Webb would be an excellent choice for Dem VP.
Gen Odom's testimony before Congress
Why aren't we listening to people like Odom. I think Webb is a great asset to the Democratic Party. In fact, I think Senator Obama should consider him as his Veep. I have felt this way from day one and I am only more convinced every day.
Bomb Iran?? Give them/us a break!
Good luck getting us out. We're in for it. Bush wants to bomb Iran this Sunday the 6th. Copy and paste this link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Italian+and+German+blogs%2Ciran&btn... I voted for Bush, but I'm starting to dislike him. What about all the sleeper-terrorist cells in the US?
Why does he think he can get away with this?

April 6, 2007, that is. It pays to read the fine print.
Wow... this is revolutionary stuff.
Yes an individual before Congress delivering a speech which hasn't been cleared by AIPAC. Extraordinary... I never thought that day would come.
Lt. Gen. Odom
Lt. Gen Odom has the qualities to help lead America out of its quagmire in Iraq, Afghanistan, the American economy and world goodwill. Definite candidate as a minimum would be Vice President (this time on the Democrat side).
Let's hear more about this General
WOW, someone who speaks authoritatively, rationally and honestly about the occupation of Iraq. He has the courage to do this because he is RETIRED... that is the Ret. behind his name. I bet most of the Generals agree with him, but cannot speak out against the occupation because of retribution. I would love to hear the mainstream media report on such testimony so the American public knows educated, battle-hardened Generals agree with the overwhelming majority of people: we need to get out of Iraq!
Truth to power
Typically inightful and cogent commentary by one of America's most talented military professionals. He has had it right on this fiasco since its beginning. I hope the Senators were listening, though their track record would strongly suggest this to be unikely. I ardently hope General Odom will continue to tell it like it is!
Rapid withdrawal the solution (Gral. Odom)
He is completely right. We should begin deconstructing such a ridiculous farce thish is our occupation of Iraq. After our troops are home we should begin reparations to a country that we invaded for no reason at all.

General Odom's testimony
Wholeheartedly agree with the General on 99% of what he said, BUT wish to ask the good general one question:
What evidence do you have that Iran is supporting the Taliban? If there is such evidence, please provide it.
Barnett Rubin is USA expert on Iran, he recently wrote:
When Iran Revolutionary Guards helped the U.S. destroy al-Qaida's bases in Afghanistan, overthrow the Taliban, and form an interim government under UN supervision, the Bush administration responded by putting Iran (then led by President Muhammad Khatami) on the "axis of evil".
General Odom and the Senate FRC.
All hail to General Odom and his brass appendages.
This is the only truly thoughtful and reasoned comment on the Iraq fiasco since it began five years ago.
Let us all wish this courageous man well.
I wonder if he will have an unfortunate vehicle accident or if the lice in the Administration will only find ways to deprive him of his pension.
Hail again to a brave man and a true patriot.
A Limey who still cares

Yes but...
What the general says is pure good sense. The problem is, that if the US withdraws from Iraq now, the European Union will fill the gap and the Iraqi oil contracts will mainly go to the European energy corporations. The US is now considered as the "bad guy" in Iraq while the much less militarily implicated European Union plays the role of the good guy. In short, if the yankees go home now, then will come soon the Soros-European "open society". There is more about Iraq than merely Middle-Eastern strategy: it is about planetary strategy.
So?????
It's not our fucking oil. Perhaps if Bush and the neocons had recognized that before they made the decision to invade and occupy, they might have recognized the foolishness of their plan.
I guess it would suck to spend over a trillion dollars and come away with nothing to show for it, huh?
Um, no...
The European Union isn't going to do shit. They barely have any soldiers over there to begin with.
Do you think they are gonna just sweep in, and then the Iraqis are gonna be alright with that? Hell no. Theyll have to go through the same shit we did, only theyll have to fight a more confident "insurgent army" and they know this. Going over there would be political suicide...
