What took you so long to decide to leave? I left in 1982 after the nation went crazy and fell for the scam of the Reagan candidacy. I mean, who could not tell that the job of president was being filled by an actor?

Marilyn, I wanted to acknowledge your wise and insightful assessment of what is going on in this country. It is going on at all levels, and I wanted to share a microcosm of this in a situation that happened to me last week at work:

I was falsely accused of leaving a door open in the evening last Monday nite, by an office manager and a director. The big boss gave the office manager false information to accuse me with, (that the cleaning people could not have done it , therefore it was me). This false information had a life of its own and went through three chains-of-command before I was called into the office manager's office. I was called on the carpet with this false information by the office manager in her office. And the director "kidded" with me in the breakroom that I left ALL the doors open (ha-ha, not).

Several days later the issue came up as an agenda item "office security" at the Friday "Staff Meeting" where the big boss shows up. Clearly by then I had suffered a lot of angst over this.
I laid all the cards on the table, even though I was a nervous wreck by then (sleepless nights included) that I did not appreciate false accusations against me and I'd like them to stop from the office manager and the director. Well the big boss repeats the false information (that he started) that it could not have been the cleaning people that left the door open , because they start cleaning the office at 11pm. Well lo and behold, everyone started harping that that was not the case because everyone had a story of watching the cleaning people come in right after work! (Big boss not knowing this, because he does not work in our wing of the office~ duh). Then I brought up the fact that me and a co-worker's keys do not work on the door in question, that we have to close it from the inside , and go out another door and lock that one from the outside. And lo and behold , everyone started chattering at once that THEIR keys don't work on the door in question either! I looked at the big boss and said "The door that was supposedly not locked has a broken lock that needs to be fixed. Nobody's key is working , so it must be the lock." Lastly, I brought up the fact that I am a "checker" (one of those people that double and triple checks doors, stoves, plugs, etc. ) and EVERYONE has witnessed this!
So two things came out that were FACTS (not false)
1) the cleaning people come after we are at work , as everyone has stayed late and everyone were eyewitnesses to that
2) the door in question has a lock that needs replacement, because the lock would "stick" with everybody's keys

I then declared "Since I am in venting mode, I would like to get something else out. The kitchen list is not fair. It is archaic, oppressive and frankly politically incorrect for years now. Everyone uses the kitchen, but only women are on the list. There are three men that work here too, they should be on the list. Of course two men are in supervisory positions , but one is not (and supervisory is not the issue anyways, a past female assistant director insisted on putting herself on the list). Since everyone uses the kitchen, it would be more equitable if everyone was on the cleanup list." EVERYONE then wanted some action on this one, as there were years of pent up venting from everyone about the messes and who should not clean up other peoples' messes, etc. Finally a new policy was arrived upon, everyone cleans up their own messes, if any utensils or food receptacles are left at the end of the day, even if its Tupperware (TM) , THEY GO IN THE GARBAGE! Everyone was happy with this new policy (even though it was thirty-five years too late in my estimation...when equal rights movement was beginning.)

Don't worry , I am arriving at my point to my story ;) : At the end of the day, since I no longer want to be the last one in the office responsible for locking the doors , I flew out the back door which we are allowed to take right at 5pm, and it closes automatically. The director (he is a very nice new young guy) caught up with me and was walking to the parking lot with me. As I expected , he expressed that he did not mean anything by his "kidding" that I left all the doors open , but I explained to him he said that right after the office manager had called me on the carpet about one of the front doors not being locked. Then he got into his new director mode in the parking lot and said I should have brought it to him first. And I said "NO , that would not have resolved anything because I do not do private , secret behind closed doors meetings anymore, because I do NOT allow a door closed behind me at all. I have learned the hard way that that is NOT protecting me, just the perpetrators that I have the grievance against. " I let this new guy know I put everything out on the table (I picked up that phrase somewhere) at the Staff Meetings if my issues come up, and let the chips fall where they may. I also clued him in that this will help him , if he caught on to anything that went on at the Staff Meeting earlier that day, about who REALLY generated the false information. I told him I have learned over the years that this protects ME as an employee. :o)

So anyways, I will find out if I have a job Monday ;D But I DO know that the lock on the door in question
will now be replaced, and that the "Kitchen Clean-up List" has been shredded for the first time in years :-D

Segue> We have to watch our backs at all levels of society now, because this game that supervisors have always played of keeping things "private, behind closed doors" which does not protect employees, has gotten worse , I believe, since the Bush Administration.

Marilyn, I opened this page up to leave a comment for David, but am compelled to leave a comment for you first. What a heartfelt and sadly honest response to the last seven years of our government. Your expressions reflect the mood of so many progressives today. I am going to save them for myself on my blog. I can't even begin to predict how they will make me feel come November.

BTW, would you mind directing me to where you learned that "military spy equipment that looks through walls and roofs into our bedrooms and basements is now being used on US citizens"? I don't doubt the statements authenticity one bit; I'd just like to know where it came from.

Your post brings together the already huge number of things that have undermined the Democratic Republic we once had.
The entrenchment of those who subscribe to empire, greed, and profiteering as goals is surely ominous for the future of this country and this planet.
Of the remaining choices, Obama offers the best hope to alter that direction.
Just as important are the Congressional races. We must rid our Congress of those of the mentality of empire, greed, and profiteering. The arrogance and disregard for domestic concerns and the gridlock created by the Republicans just because they can must end. It is time to end the disastrous policies that have gotten us to this point. The MSM will keep the Dem primaries stories going as long as possible to keep corporate ad money flowing.
