Obama's Hometown Considers Resolution Against War with Iran

This morning, the Chicago City Council considers a resolution against war with Iran and in favor of real diplomacy. I'll be following the proceedings here. The meeting started at 10 AM Central.

The proceedings are streamed on the web.

10:16 At the moment the Council is "debating" a resolution praising a recently passed Chicago resident who owned a barbecue restaurant. My spin: this is good for us. I think it would be hard for anyone to argue that the Council doesn't have time to consider the resolution against war with Iran.

10:35: Currently considering resolution honoring Eugene Pincham. Here’s the MSNBC obituary.

12:55: Council still discussing other items. Michael Lynn of the Chicago No War on Iran Coalition says there is speculation that the vote might be deferred until June - apparently, two members of the council can defer a vote for a month (but they can only do this once.) We won't know until it comes up on the agenda.

1:00 My positive spin if they postpone the vote: another bite at the apple. Another round of press coverage. Here's the snarky but not 100% awful Chicago Tribune story from yesterday:

City may oppose Iran invasion

1:30 pm. Still has not come up on the agenda. Consensus of the activists seems to be that they expect that it will be deferred. Question remains: will it just be deferred for a month, or will it be deferred longer. Our understanding is that to be deferred more than a month, Alderman Moore would have to agree.

2:11. The vote was deferred until June.

Robert N - update, please.

Am watching now and someone talking about a woman killed on Halloween while taking kids trick-or-treating.
Has Iran resolution taken place?

The last half hour has

been congratulating the ROTC students and their schools. One comment was "and to think some people tried to keep the military out of our schools" (loose quote). Will be interesting to see if Iran resolution comes up. Definitely checking out what my school system allows.

re: ROTC

yeah, it was kind of surreal - i was passing the time waiting for them to get to Iran and I was reading the Common Dreams article today about how the US is in violation of international agreements about military recruiting of youth and meanwhile the Aldermen are going on about how great Junior ROTC is...

Update: Daley opposes council resolution against Iran invasion

Daley opposes council resolution against Iran invasion
-Fran Spielman, City Hall Reporter, Chicago Sun-Times
[ http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/950120,iran051508.article ]

A resolution opposing a U.S. invasion of Iran was sandbagged at today’s City Council meeting at the behest of Mayor Daley, who called it a threat to Israel and Illinois’ favorite son Barack Obama.

In 2003, Daley reluctantly agreed to go along with a carefully worded resolution opposing a “unilateral, preemptive U.S. military attack” on Iraq.

But he put his foot down on the resolution condemning a war with Iran on grounds that it would tie the hands of Illinois’ favorite son.

“It’s not fair. Let Obama answer all of those questions. He is gonna be the nominee of the Democratic party, and he will be the president. That will be up to him to make the judgments. Passing a resolution like that puts a lot of burden upon his candidacy and injects something that should not be injected” into the presidential campaign, Daley said.

Obama isn’t the mayor's only concern. So is Israel.

“If Iran attacks Israel, we should sit back and not do anything? They haven’t attacked us, [but] they can attack everyone else? I have real problems with that,” Daley said.

“I just supported a resolution for the 60th anniversary of Israel. Harry Truman almost created Israel. Let’s be realistic. The United States did. I’m very strong for Israel’s independence and survival. The resolution says that if Iran does something, we should not do anything. I don’t get it.”

Daley’s son, Patrick, serves in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He is deployed overseas at an undisclosed location.

Thanks, Dick

An interesting article by jstreet.org about supporting diplomacy and Israel. Not directly related, but it fits I think.
