Remembering Tim Russert
. . . as one who at a crucial time in '02 lobbed softballs to Dick Cheney.
By Harkavy, Village Voice
It's tragic that Tim Russert unexpectedly died, leaving behind family and friends who loved him.
That said, let's try to keep this in perspective — and not the perspective offered up this afternoon by the Washington Post, which called him "the Democratic operative turned NBC commentator who revolutionized Sunday morning television and infused journalism with his passion for politics."
He did not revolutionize anything. He was a news reader, a media celebrity, not a soldier dying in a futile war.
As our body count in Iraq keeps right on climbing, I'll recall Russert's classic '02 interview of Dick Cheney on Meet the Press as a true exemplar of recent American journalism.
I don't mean that in a nice way.
The exact date was September 8, 2002, as Cheney and his frontman, George W. Bush, were lobbying Americans and members of Congress on the urgent necessity of invading Iraq. This was before the key Senate vote.
We now know they were lying, but many of us were thinking that back in '02. Drowning out the dissenters were most of the U.S. media outlets — not all, but most.
And media celebs such as Russert were playing their roles as wing men for schnooks such as Cheney.
In June 2005, I parsed Russert's '02 interview with Cheney in an item called "Shuck and Awe." So I'm just going to plagiarize myself and re-run that item here. See for yourself:
Shuck and Awe
Originally posted June 6, 2005
Before the "shock and awe" of March '03, there was shuck and jive. But the Downing Street Memo and other British government documents revealing Blair-Bush skullduggery in 2002 are not old news.
In fact, the recently released documents offer fresh clues not only about (1) the contempt the Bush and Blair regimes had for the intelligence of the American public and press but also about (2) why the occupation of Iraq has turned into such a horror show.
On March 14, 2002, Tony Blair's foreign policy adviser, David Manning, reported to his boss after meetings with Condi Rice and a National Security Council "team" in D.C., according to a memo leaked three years later:
We spent a long time at dinner on IRAQ. It is clear that Bush is grateful for your support and has registered that you are getting flak. I said that you would not budge in your support for regime change but you had to manage a press, a Parliament and a public opinion that was very different than anything in the States.
What do you suppose he meant by "different"? Well, the U.S. press, for one thing, is much more easily gulled—in general, that is.
Only three days before Manning sent that memo to Blair, Dick Cheney (on his way to the Middle East) was in Great Britain meeting with the prime minister. The two regimes' CEOs stood still for a press conference in London, where the reporters aren't afraid to ask tough questions, and the Bush regime can't put on its own dog-and-pony show. Here's an example from the March 11, 2002, press conference, courtesy of a White House transcript:
QUESTION: Mr. Vice President, if the inspectors are allowed into Iraq, will that negate the need to take military action against Baghdad? If you do have to take military action against Baghdad, what will be the legal basis of that action? And if you can't build a coalition that many support, will [you] go ahead anyway?
Cheney's reply? This is how he started it:
They do the same thing here they do in the States, that's ask these long complex questions.
russert-meet-the-press-135.jpgYeah, that was really complex. But I guess compared with the "grilling" he gets from people like Tim Russert (left), it's complex. On September 8, 2002, Russert hosted Cheney on Meet the Press and played slow-pitch with him—open-ended questions, perfect for spinning. Here's one:
RUSSERT: Let me turn to the issue of Iraq. You have said that it poses a mortal threat to the United States. How? Define mortal threat.
Yes, ask the vice president to define a buzz phrase that he and his handlers have spent a lot of time honing. Here's another softball:
RUSSERT: There seems to be a real debate in the country as to [Saddam's] capability. This is how the New York Times reported comments by Senator Chuck Hagel, a Republican, who said, “The Central Intelligence Agency had 'absolutely no evidence' that Iraq possesses or will soon possess nuclear weapons.” Is that accurate?
Gee, what do you think Cheney will say when you let him off the hook with a stupid-ass "Is that accurate?" appended to an otherwise-promising line of questioning? Here's how Cheney belted that blooper pitch:
CHENEY: I disagree. I think the accurate thing to say is we don't know when he might actually complete that process. All of the experience we have points in the direction that, in the past, we've underestimated the extent of his program.
Keep in mind, now, that Cheney was making up this shit. The Bush and Blair regimes were "fixing" the intelligence, as the Downing Street Memo, revealed three years too late, put it.
A little later in the Russert interview, Cheney said:
We know we have a part of the picture. And that part of the picture tells us that [Saddam] is, in fact, actively and aggressively seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.
Which provoked this question:
RUSSERT: Why haven't our allies, who presumably would know the same information, come to the same conclusion?
Big problem with this question, Tim. You're asking a question that Cheney cannot answer. He can't speak for others' actions. Instead of pinning him down, you're leaving him room to roam.
Russert could have asked this instead: "Our allies haven't come to that conclusion, and they would have no reason to cover for Saddam. You say 'we know.' Give me a specific example of what 'we know,' and how that is at odds with what our allies' intelligence tells them."
But Russert didn't ask that. Instead, he asked Cheney why our allies hadn't "come to the same conclusion." How in the world could Cheney know "why"? (Except for the fact that he and Blair were making up shit and the allies weren't—but he couldn't very well admit that.) This one was easy for Cheney to hit out of the park:
CHENEY: I don't think they know the same information. I think the fact is that, in terms of the quality of our intelligence operation, I think we're better than anybody else, generally, in this area.
Oh, so our intelligence was good, eh?
Cheney was just giving himself a pat on the back, because the Bush regime was making it up as it went along, so it could justify an unjustified invasion of Iraq.
So, do you see a difference in the kinds of questions British and American politicians have to face? Democracy is more raucous in Great Britain, and the press—with exceptions—is more docile in America.
Now for the other part of the equation: the disastrous occupation that has followed the unjustified invasion. Go directly to the Downing Street memo itself for that. The memo from Matthew Rycroft to Manning of Manning's meeting with Blair on July 23, 2002, summarized MI6 chief Richard Dearlove's recent visit to D.C. (Dearlove is referred to as "C.") Here's a passage from the memo:
C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.
"Little discussion" of the "aftermath," huh? We'd better make sure there's plenty of discussion about that.

NOT forgiven
I will never forgive the man for his treatment of Dennis Kucinich during the debates. ESPECIALLY the UFO question.
Dennis Kucinich is a Loser
Dennis Kucinich is a Loser and a sissy. He deserved a beat down for that stupid UFO comment
Speaking of losers "ANONYMOUS"...
How ya doing today?
I remember that
and will not forget it. Thanks for reminding.
Russert was complicit
in the outing of Valerie Plame, as well.
It's Sunday morning and MSNBC is still regurgitating old Russert video. This is quite amazing, actually. Is this public, corporate grieving? Or something else?
It is certainly unique for American television - something reserved for US Presidents. "Big Russ" really was a major player in the "government without a name," no doubt.
Russert's death: Looks Bad
Didn't it occur to anyone that Mr. Russert's untimely death is, in several ways highly suspect? Russert was closely connected with Vice President Cheney's outing of Valerie Plame - and now Kucinich just filed Articles of Impeachment specifically including a Count on the treasonous Plame Outing. For which there is already ample evidence of a cover-up, in the form of the Scooter Libby Perjury and his instant Presidential Pardon.
Meanwhile, let no one forget that MSM news anchor/"reporter"s play their own unique brand of Politics - finding a crowd and then getting in front of it - and the pattern has always been that they get the green light - and then do - turn viciously on a Lame Duck Presidency, after a certain point. Certainly you can see other anchors of the MSM beginning to do this more frequently, and more stridently, in recent months.
Sticking in my mind is one of the more notable gushings of the MSM fawning over Russert, to the effect that "powerful figures had to submit to Russert's tough scrutiny". Perhaps true only in the case of the Lame Duck (Clinton's) Presidency. But that's exactly where Cheney/BushCo are right now.
Maybe Russert was deciding it was time to apply this same treatment to Cheney/BushCo, on their way out. Maybe Russert was going to start working with Kucinich a little bit; and devote some attention - perhaps even reveal some of the truth he personally knew so well - regarding the whole Sewer of PlameGate. And maybe Göerge Bushz, the Vice Prick and I. Liar Libby, et. al., decided they didn't like the implications of that...?
What we've seen: Kucinich threatened Articles of Impeachment against Bush, and within a week his younger brother died - again, well before his time. And now Kucinich introduces Articles of Impeachment against Bush, and within a week Tim Russert - a major potential material witness to one of the highest-profile charges therein - dies suddenly and prematurely.
I don't like it - all together it smells, and Smells Bad.
This Father's Day let's honor our fathers - and their fathers, and all our forefathers - by keeping our eyes open and vigilant to protect the Freedom they worked so hard to promote.

Yes, it smells bad
It smells really bad especially as you forgot to mention the "heart attack" less than 2 weeks ago of General Odom who was a fierce critic of Bush/Cheney and their illegal use of the DOD for propaganda, which they are beginning to use again in their run-up to a war with Iran.
It is well known that in the world of WMD, as long ago as 50 years, they could take a little pin, dipped in a chemical, and hit a horse in the hind quarters and the horse would be dead in seconds from what appeared to be a "heart attack".
This needs to be investigated thoroughly.
Good fucking grief!
Tim Russert died in his office with no doctor in attendance which means under the law, an automatic autopsy.
Can't you people wait for the results of autopsy before hovering over a body like vultures and spewing out all the conspiracy theories.

We have a right to be suspicious,
and our concern IS for Tim Russert's family , and others in positions like his. I think back on Dan Rather and the anthrax "scare".
I was not aware that an automatic autopsy was required by law in this case, that's welcome news!
There's a lot of reason to try to protect our journalists' backs as much as we want them to protect us. It's gotta be a two-way street, if we really want journalists to be the watch-dog for the people.

Don't think that "the thought" didn't cross my mind. In fact I mentioned it to my wife while Meet the Press was on this morning.
But thinking "the thought" is one thing and jumping to conclusions and making them public is entirely another.
Muddying water unnecessarily before the all the facts come in is just that, unnecessary muddy water and I for one don't think that Tim's family needs any ideas planted in their minds nor more grief right now than they already have with his loss.
TP
The political party I belong to is the entire body politic of the United States of America and our Constitution that I support without bias which neither states or implies any allegiance with any other socalled organized political party.
If we thought it, or even "suspect" it, it should be aired
Because everyone here wants this autopsy to be official and according to Hoyle, and I would imagine, the Russert family would want that assurance more than anybody.
It doesn't hurt anyone to know that we are on our toes and vigilant at all times.
I am relieved there is an automatic autopsy , as you say, in this case, because it will bring out the truth about his death. That should squash most "conspiracy theories" after that.
But frankly, all these other un-sourced lies about his life are much more heart-breaking, to me.

Independentasitgets
Independentasitgets, a lot of my friends are professional pilots who have logged thousands of hours on heavys, F-18s and I am a pilot too. Knew there was something bogus about "9/11" from day one.
Senator Wellstone and John F Kennedy Jr's untimely deaths were too convenient for the Bush mafia to be ignored as a coincidence either. If you take a look into the Bush family's body count you might be astounded by the hundreds of "convenient deaths" around those subhuman murderous parasites.
http://www.stewwebb.com/Murder%20Bush%20Body%20Count%20Part%201.html
Until proven otherwise, Tim Russert's untimely death is indeed suspicious to say the least. Especially considering the current extraordinary circumstances of surreal corruption on a epic scale. The "Agency" has a lot of ways of murdering people and making it look like a "heart attack". Lest we forget, Poppy Bush was a CIA Director, he has been involved with them at least since his Zapata Oil (Cocaine Smuggling) days.
Remember, we are dealing with world class murderers here OK? Healthy suspicions of any death around these thugs is more than justified. There is a distinct possibility that Tim Russert knew too much at a "inconvenient" time.
The Timing Of Russert's Death Raises Some Questions....
It's interesting that TIm Russert's very untimely death comes barely a week after Dennis Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against George W. Bush, considering that Russert would be considered a prime material witness in the "outing" of CIA operative Valerie Plame-Wilson, and he possessed intimate knowledge of how the "outing" was done, and all of those key players who participated in it.
What should be of concern is the scary possibility that Tim Russert may have been (and remember, this is strictly my thought concerning this, so forget about any wild "conspiracy theories") covertly "assassinated" in order to make an example of him to those journalists who dare to actively challenge the current Administration, especially when (not "if") those Presidential Security Directives are ever put into effect. If anything, we need to protect the few courageous journalists who continue to speak truth to power because they're acting as true watch-dogs for our interests, and we need to look after them in the same way they look after us.
Remember this ... "Suspicion" is merely a state of heightened awareness, and we all need to be more aware and alert during these very dangerous days.
You're misunderestimating the value of Trillion$
I'm not talking about a twenty dollar bill in your pocket, I'm talking about a stack of twenty dollar bills that reaches the moon...
I'd just love to be patient enough for that 100% Transparent Autopsy Report, and I'd love to have faith in Justice For All and all that Pre-"9/11 Changed Everything" government-accountability stuff, and I'd love to see a civil society without conspiracies (which is an oxymoron) and all, OH, and I'd also love to dismiss the Stakes: $3+ Trillion in government-welfare plus $10's of Trillions in hedge profits produced through deliberate acts of market/supply destabilization, militarization of the US and the World, the spreading of Al CIAda, Thrashing of International Law, and Raping of the Constitution, but I really just can't seem to dismiss Matty's idea that these nazi's "MIGHT" have an interest in an occasional murder involving high-profile individuals with real-dirt on this US Fascist Coup... I mean, it's not like insiders played any role in JFK, RFK, MLK, John Lennon, MalcX, or other heavy-hitters questioning the military-industrial-beast, right? It's not like any members of Congress were targeted by DoD-supplied Anthrax for questioning the 9/11 narrative of the Coup sponsors, right?
It's called a conspiracy theory before the trial, and it is the substance upon which we investigate suspects... you know, this is the way the world turns, eh?
If Admiral Fallon is the next one, then will you begin considering whether Billionaire-Mobsters would consider assassination? What high-profile "untimely", Zero-witness heart-attack, plane crash, suicide type DC Madam death will trigger the investigator in you? Russert, the target of 1,000's of petitions to air Kucinich's Impeachment Articles is not good enough?

Complicit Enabler
Complicit Enabler of the current regime - doesn't mean Tim Russert wasn't a good man, just that a lot of folks inside the DC Beltway have climbed the ladders (some of which function as escalators to and from Hell) of success via the fine (or not so fine) art of covering for and enabling the corporate fascist regime in power for the last eight years. Brian Williams, Charlie what's-his-name, Katie Couwreck, Wolf Blitzer, CNN and the entire brownshirt staff over at Faux News have all booked passage on the USS Empire, and are helping steer this military-media-disinformation whore house in the direction of dictatorship. Too bad George Orwell and Aldous Huxley aren't still around to see what the Nazi refugees have wrought in the 60 years since 1947.
Russert is guilty of not owning a Crystal Ball in 2002
and of working for a Corporate Whore. Wow, there's a lot of glass houses out there!
How many of us can say we can eat and live without working for Corporate Whores? Obviously not many of us, since the majority of us use ANONYMOUS HANDLES, unlike Tim Russert.

Russert is Guilty of being a Complicit Enabler
When you think about it, Mainstream Corporate Media such as NBC, CBS and ABC are MORE GUILTY in terms of deception and violating the public's trust. Faux News is up front concerning its right-wing pro-administration stance and coverage, while the MSM news pretends to be objective and investigative, which it's obviously not.
And in terms of working for a Corporate Whore - last year we published Naomi Wolf's book "The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot." So yeah, I don't see a problem with being critical of people such as Russert, who give the pretense of asking tough, critical questions when in fact they skim the surface at best.
So publishing companies have no taint of corporatism ?
So you found a pristine paradise that actually hired you , where you don't have to worry about bread and butter for yourself or your family, lucky you. If that's really true, then why not reveal yourself for all the world to bask in your glory? Most Americans are not so lucky.
What , exactly, give specifics please , is Russert guilty of? You are talking about a man who is not yet cold in the grave. Ok, you claim to work for a publishing company, surely you can come up with more fact-oriented research to prove your points, instead of trite phrases such as "complicit enabler" .
Maybe we should condemn all employees of publishing companies as those who sell trite phrases under the guise of research. And where was your publishing company in 2002 during the road paved with lies to war?

That's NOT true, these lies about Russert are wrong
All reports about Russert's testimony are that Russert did NOT DISCUSS and did NOT LEAK Plame to Libby, according to Tim Russert's own testimony sworn under oath, and this helped Fitzgerald as evidence to INDICT Scooter Libby with his perjury case! It was an obvious Bush Administration set-up. If anything, Russert is a reluctant hero, because NBC's lawyers tried to stop him from testifying , due to First Amendment right (Press uses this to protect their sources so that sources will not be reluctant to talk to Press).

"Russert Resisted Testifying on Leak
By Carol D. Leonnig
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, January 10, 2006; Page A05
Lawyers for NBC News reporter Tim Russert suspected in the spring of 2004 that his testimony could snare Vice President Cheney's top aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, in a lie and Russert resisted testifying at the time about private conversations with Libby, according to court papers released yesterday.
Russert was aware that a special prosecutor probing the leak of a CIA operative's name knew of his summer 2003 telephone conversation with Libby, and that Libby had released him from any promise of confidentiality. But Russert, the Washington bureau chief for NBC News and host of "Meet the Press," and his attorneys argued in previously sealed court filings in June 2004 that he should not have to tell a grand jury about that conversation, because it would harm Russert's relationship with other sources.
Russert ultimately testified under oath about the conversation after a federal judge ordered him to do so in July 2004. The information Russert provided became important evidence that Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald used to indict Libby in October on five felony counts of lying to the FBI and a grand jury, and of obstruction of justice.
Fitzgerald accused Libby of lying to investigators when he said he believed he heard about Valerie Plame's CIA role from Russert in their July 2003 telephone conversation. Russert testified that they never discussed Plame.
U.S. District Judge Thomas F. Hogan released the court papers involving Russert yesterday. They were sought by the New York Times.
It "appears that Mr. Russert's testimony is sought solely because the Special Prosecutor believes that his recollection of a telephone conversation with an Executive Branch official is inconsistent with that official's statements," they wrote."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Russert
"CIA leak scandal
In the Plame affair, Scooter Libby, convicted chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney, told special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald that Russert was the first to tell him of the identity of Central Intelligence Agency officer Valerie Plame (Mrs. Joseph C. Wilson). Russert testified previously, and again in United States v. I. Lewis Libby, that he would neither testify whether he spoke with Libby nor would he describe the conversation.[11][12] Russert did say, however, that Plame's identity as a CIA operative was not leaked to him.[11]
Russert testified again in the trial on February 7, 2007.[13] At the trial, the prosecution asserted that a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent had called Russert regarding Russert's phone call with Libby, and that Russert had told the agent that the subject of Plame had not come up during his conversation with Libby.[13]
During the trial, another witness, former Cheney communications director Cathie Martin, testified that she "suggested we put the vice president on Meet the Press, which was a tactic we often used. It's our best format", allowing the administration to "control the message".[14][15]"

Happy Father's Day, Tim
I liked Tim, a lot, like millions of other Americans.
It's easy to blame somebody and to shoot the messenger who is already dead and can no longer speak for himself. All this Tim "shoulda, coulda, woulda" is Monday morning stuff. He should've read Cheney's mind, he should've re-phrased the question, he should've accused Cheney of war crimes right there on TV risking personal liability and his job, he could've done a citizen's arrest of Cheney right on the spot...How easy it is to forget the man who used an eraser board to inform the American people and let us know what the electoral count balance in 2000 was and meant, and his prediction and Paul Revere type alert on another eraser board that "Florida, Florida, Florida" would be pivotal in that race. If that isn't foresight, then what is?
The man is dead. Tim was as good as men can get, not perfect, but a GOOD man. And it's well known he is as good as a Dad can get.
It's Father's Day, I dare say, Tim Russert's favorite day of the year. Let Tim rest in peace. please.

Enough, MSNBC!
MSNBC is into its THIRD day of eulogizing the quintessential American bully Tim Russert, chief of staff of vaunted Republican/Democrat celeb Senator from New York D. P. Moynihan at age 29, corporate attorney for NBC before becoming a "journalist." (He was a corporate attorney before finding himself the Washington news bureau chief, acc. to NPR.) I think we can suggest that the "world government people" found him early. Check the Harriman-Moynihan connection, if you care to spend time on this.

Russert may have been a "good guy," as some commentaries above claim (tho I don't know how in the hell anyone who has never met the man can assert this!), but that doesn't mean he wasn't complicit in some pretty ugly shit that we will never know about. How relevant is his professed love for his father and the Buffalo Bills in all this? Bush loves sports too. So?!
Did his connections at the highest levels of the dark part of the American government get him killed? Who gives a flying fig? Let's get back to impeaching this administration and kicking Nancy Pelosi's reconstructed ass.
Here's some Wikipedia on the topic of MTP. Note the references to Tim Russert...especially his recent audience with the Pope.
Network officials, concerned for the show's future, turned to Tim Russert, the network's Washington bureau chief. He took over December 8, 1991, and remained until his death on June 13, 2008, serving as moderator longer than anyone in the program's history. [3] Under Russert, the show was expanded to one hour, and became less of a televised press conference and more focused on Russert, with longer interviews and Russert hosting panels of experts.
[edit] Format
The show's format consists of an extended one-on-one interview with the host and was sometimes followed by a roundtable discussion or one-on-two interview with figures in adversarial positions, either Congress members from opposite sides of the aisle or political commentators. The show expanded to 60 minutes starting with the September 20, 1992 broadcast.[4]
Tim Russert, who hosted from 1991 to 2008, signed off by saying, "That's all for today. We'll be back next week. If it's Sunday, it's Meet the Press." During the football season, Russert, a native of Buffalo, New York and avid Buffalo Bills fan,[5][6] sometimes added, "Go Bills!", and occasionally would ask panelists, "How 'bout those Sabres?" if the Buffalo NHL hockey team is doing well. Spoofs of the show on Saturday Night Live often reflect this addition.
Occasionally, a final segment called "The Meet the Press Minute" was added. It was devoted to topical clips from the show's extensive archives.
Russert died June 13, 2008 of a myocardial infarction while doing voice-over work for the next Sunday program.[7] He had just returned from a trip to Italy to celebrate his son's college graduation and a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI.[8] He had spent more than 16 years as moderator of Meet The Press. Former NBC Nightly News anchor and current special correspondent Tom Brokaw hosted a special edition of Meet the Press dedicated to the life of Russert on June 15, 2008.
