Primary Season Over, Barack Channels Hillary
By Dave Lindorff
Now that the primary season is over, we can see that the clear winner was Hillary Clinton.
Oh, I know. Barack Obama got the most votes and the most delegates, and he’ll be the Democratic presidential nominee this August, but increasingly, it’s becoming obvious that he’s just a pretty wrapper. Sneak a peak inside the wrapper and you’ll find Hillary Clinton inside.
Look at the facts.
No sooner did the last votes get counted in Montana, than Obama hied himself off to Washington to show his fealty to the America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), where he promised to do whatever Israel wanted. You would have thought he was Bush or Hillary, so fulsome was his promise to unquestioningly back the worst policies and actions of Israel’s criminally insane right-wing government. Claim all of Jerusalem for the Jewish state? Fine by him. Starve and terrorize a million people in Gaza? No problemo. Attack Iran to prevent a merely suspected nuclear program from eventually producing a possible bomb? Okay. Negotiate with Hamas? Never.
Then there was the FISA and Fourth Amendment-violating campaign of spying by the National Security Agency. Some members of Congress and the courts have been trying for years to find out what Bush and Cheney have really been up to with this program, but they’ve been stymied by the administration’s insistence that the phone companies, who enabled most of the spying, are immune from prosecution and don’t have to surrender records of, or talk about what they actually did. Congress, with the help of a spineless Democratic majority in both houses, came up in June with a bill that endorses the spying and gives retroactive immunity to the phone companies. 15 Senators—all Democrats-- opposed that wretched sell-out of the Constitution and the American people. Sen. Obama supported it, just like Clinton.
When the Supreme Court, in a rare exception to a rash of reactionary rulings in the past few weeks, overturned a state law authorizing the death penalty for the rape of a child, Obama stood up for the death penalty, saying that he thought states should have the right to kill anyone who would sexually abuse a child. I guess he must think the states should be able to kill people convicted of killing someone too, since murder has to be at least as nasty as child rape. Another Clinton position. Never mind that most of the people who get the death penalty are persons of color, and that almost all the 4000 people on America’s bulging death rows are either poor, desperately poor, retarded or simply insane. Never mind that rape is one of the most likely crimes to lead to wrongful convictions.
Barack was out there dissing black dads, too, charging them, as a class, with abandonment of their children, even though studies show that black fathers are no less likely to abandon their kids than are white dads. Okay, that’s not really a Hillary position. It’s more akin to Bill Clinton’s attacks on prominent blacks like Jesse Jackson or Sister Soulja during his campaigns for higher office.
It’s getting harder and harder to see any light between Obama’s and Hillary’s positions on the Iraq War too, what with Obama backing away from his earlier campaign pledge to end the war within 16 months of taking office and saying instead that he would “listen to the generals” and that withdrawal would depend upon the situation on the ground.
Finally, Obama, after showing a remarkable ability to inspire tons of small donations and support from individuals, and to fund a huge national campaign without much in the way of corporate support, is greedily slurping from Hillary’s cesspool of corporate backers, now that she’s out of the way. Soon, he’ll be wallowing in tainted cash from Wall Street commercial and investment banks and hedge funds, telecom companies, defense contractors, Big Pharma companies, the HMO industry, and the entertainment industry. He’ll be owned like just about every other politician in Washington.
The transmogrification of an upstart people’s candidate for “change” into just another front man for the corporatocracy will be complete.
Hillary will have won, but in the corporal form of Barack Obama.
The joke, of course, is that this evocation by Obama of his inner Clinton is not going to win him many votes, and may in fact lose him far more than he gains. Being Clinton, after all, didn’t win it for Hillary Clinton. It was Obama’s differences from Clinton that won him the primary votes.
Clintonian positions didn’t really win the presidency for Bill Clinton either. It was Ross Perot who won the 1992 election for Clinton, by stealing enough votes from George Bush Sr. to let Clinton win with a mere plurality of the votes cast. There won’t be any Ross Perot this year, though, so Obama can’t hope to squeak by with a minority of the votes cast the way Bill did. In fact there will be at least two candidates—a Green Party one and Ralph Nader--who will be picking off some of the people Obama’s imitation of Clinton will turn off sufficiently for them to abandon him. There will also be a Libertarian candidate running, whose outspoken opposition to the war will attract disillusioned erstwhile Obama backers. Many more voters may just stay home in disgust. (It was also Al Gore's decision to run a Clintonesque campaign of triangulation and pursuit of those elusive "mainstream" voters that made his run against Bush in 2000 close enough for the election to be stolen.)
Meanwhile, those Hillary primary voters Obama seems intent on pursuing at the expense of the progressive vote—the pro-Israel hawks in New York and Florida, the “hard-working whites” of the West Virginia hollers, the Pennsylvania hills and the flatlands of Ohio and Indiana—aren’t going to vote for him just because he adopts Hillary’s positions. They’ll want the real deal, not just a front man posing as a front woman, so they’ll go for John McCain (just as they would have in November had Hillary won the nomination).
You gotta ask why a guy who had it all going for him is suddenly making such incredibly bad strategic decisions.
It has to be either that he’s brought on board too many Clinton backers, or that his own strategists have lost confidence in their own game plan. In his bid for Democratic Party “unity” Obama has sold whatever soul he once had.
He has met the enemy, and he has become her.

listen up River Citians!
The fifth sentence says it all: "No sooner did the last votes get counted in Montana, than Obama hied himself off to Washington to show his fealty to the America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), where he promised to do whatever Israel wanted."
We are totally fucked for the next four years.
At least it's good we can all start realizing it now, instead of having to wait for the disappointment to come in January. The sooner the truth sets in, the sooner we can focus on efforts - like those of Vincent Bugliosi - which offer real direct action instead of the delusional wishful thinking hyped by the young black Music Man.
Had Enough Yet?
Obama, better than McCain not good enough!
Fortunately I never contributed to Obama's campaign, just watching and waiting as to how things would play out. Obama's AIPAC speech turned the tide for me, exactly what change has he been talking about for the last six months?
There is only one way that the strangle hold that the Republicans and Democrats have on the political system will be broken; that is when enough citizens get fed up enough to vote for and support third party candidates. Ralph Nader and Bob Barr are two legitimate alternatives to the big party Ds and Rs. Get out there and support and vote for these two. Nader and Barr getting ten, fifteen, twenty percent in the poles will send shock waves thru the political system. It will only happen if we act.
If you really believe in the Constitution and bringing an end to American militarism and war, why would you vote for Barack Osame. Strike a blow for liberty vote for and support real antiwar candidates Barr or Nader; Barack Obama is not your man!
I cannot believe that Cindy Sheehan, Ralph Nader and Bob Barr are strugling to raise money for their campaigns? It is time to put your money where your mouth is and support these candidates for real change! Why these three have not allready raised millions is beyond me?
The American Dream
"It's called 'The American Dream' because you have to be asleep to believe it" -George Carlin
If enough Americans weren't so completely brainwashed and conditioned to buy into (pun intended) the capitalist cult of mass consumerism, they might have enough energy, interest and intelligence to insist that our elected officials honor their oath to support and defend the Constitution. But then again I think that a majority of Americans actually prefer living in a corporate-controlled instant-gratification fascist state that caters to overconsumption and mindless entertainment. If this weren't true it wouldn't matter how much money a candidate could or couldn't raise when running for office - people such as Nader, Barr, Kucinich and Cynthia McKinney would easily be elected over cretins such as Bush, Reagan, Nixon and the other criminals, on principle alone.
AIPAC
Are you people so ignorant that you don't understand that the biggest threat to Obama losing the election is the whisper campaign going on that he is a Muslim. If he did not stand strong in front of AIPAC, it would have confirmed their worst suspicions. I am not saying that Obama is being false with his statement to AIPAC, but watch his actions, not his words.
JUST KNOW THAT OBAMA WILL BE DEFEATED BY THE WHISPER CAMPAIGN, STARTING WITH FLORIDA IF HE DOESN'T ACT STRONG IN THE DEFENSE OF IAREAL, WHICH EVERY PRESIDENT HAS DONE FOR 60 YEARS.
GET OVER YOURSELVES, QUIT BEING SO STUPID.
turn off that Zionist TV crap
You've been watching too much of that antiquated Zionist TV news Anon.
If Obama loses, it will probably be because folks are sick of yet another so-called "change" politician NOT changing the criminal backing of Israel.
I myself, and MANY others, will absolutely not back anyone cowering to the racist state that is currently running the world's largest concentration camp.
Approaching Oblinton....
So ... we have Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton standing on a stage in Unity, New Hampshire, and once again, we're presented with the spectacle of a puppet candidate being manipulated by the puppeteer; only this time, it's Hillary Clinton who's pulling Barack Obama's strings, and while it's his voice you may be hearing, it's her words which are pouring out of his mouth.
Does this matter to the vast majority of Americans, especially the 80% of Americans who occupy the lower income brackets who will bear the brunt of Hillarack's grand plans for the nation, especially since Oblinton hasn't spoken out vigorously in favor of the impeachment of Bush/Cheney? Of course not. Unfortunately, Americans have been taught to wholeheartedly embrace -- and to become comfortable with -- living in a "a corporate-controlled instant-gratification fascist state that caters to overconsumption and mindless entertainment" ever since John Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated.
For these Americans, getting up from the couch and taking to the streets in a mass movement to "insist that our elected officials honor their oath to support and defend the Constitution" is just too much of an effort. They prefer to sit on the sidelines as spectators of history who don't mind being patriotic, as long as they don't have to make a personal commitment to give life service to "patriotism". They don't have the energy, interest and intelligence to do this, because acting as responsible citizens of a republic takes precious time away from "all-American" pastimes such as the following ...
"Keeping up with the Joneses" by spending themselves into deeper and deeper levels of personal indebtedness.
Playing the role of "virtuous victim" in order to have a "justification" for their action or lack of action.
Working longer and harder for less pay, after sitting in the middle of traffic gridlock during a longer and longer commute, and spending less and less time with family and friends.
"Living" in the ultimate "consumer society" where friends, family and even spouses can be easily replaced when one grows bored with them.
Our "pursuit of happiness" has become so aggressive and relentless that we'll tolerate anything, including living under a fascist form of government if it means we'll get our wants, needs and desires of the present moment fulfilled immediately. And in a major stroke of irony, the nation which has actually achieved the "American Dream" is Canada.
Now, we're at the crossroads, and due to our constant craving for "change", which is strictly superficial in nature, we're ready to embrace whatever "Oblinton" promises us, even though the "change" they promise us may turn out to be more of the same, just a different label.
oblinton
If you think Obama strings are being pulled by Hillary, you are seriously drinking too much koolaid stepheil1776. But obviously your post is just more Republican bullshit, like your name--Step Heil. Heil Hitler to you, in lock step!!!
This Is My Point, Harry....
First, just to clarify things, I'm NOT a Republican, nor am I drinking any "kool-aid". I find the Republican Party to be an abomination to the memory of Abraham Lincoln, and a repudiation of everything he stood for, and the Democratic Party is in the same degenerative state. I'm an Independent, and I'm going to be voting for either Ralph Nader or Cynthis McKinney for President, thank you much.
Secondly, Obama's strings aren't just being pulled by Hillary; her strings are also being pulled as well. Who's the puppet master behind both of them, and the bulk of Republican and Democratic Party members? The Anglo-Dutch financier/corporate oligarchy, who are currently in an existential crisis. Their reckless economic manipulation, and trampling of national sovereignty has caused the collapse of the global financial system which they created, and the collapse of that system threatens their very existence.
Both Clinton and Obama have sounded the drumbeats for war against Iran because they know that the next President will have to deal with a domestic economy which has been ravaged and ruined by forty years of vicious neglect and a ballooning military budget, and in order to get the American people distracted enough to not take mass political action to correct the economic collapse, a war against Iraq will certainly get their minds off of the economy in a hurry, especially if a false-flag "terror" attack heralds the advent of war.
My point stephie1776
Obama, has not beat the war drums to bomb Iran.
HE HAS STATED MANY TIMES THAT HE WOULD MEET WTH IRANIANS.
The DLC is in lock-step with the multi-national corporations and Hillary was their candidate. Why do you think there has been so much animosity between the DLC and the DNC. Obama is the DNC candidate and the first thing he did was to closed 527's (Corporate money).
Obama knows that the economy is directly tied to the illegal and unprovoked Iraq War and he intends to stop it. He will investigate all the corruption surrounding every aspect of the lies that took us into Iraq and then the investigations, which are currently underway (Waxman, among others), to expose the theft of America's treasury in Iraq will proceed.
If you don't understand that the battle for the nomination was between the Corporations and the American people, you have missed something very important. Hillary and Bill founded the DLC, which invited Corporations into the Democratic Party. Hillary was their candidate---The Corporations. Obama was the people's candidate.
The REASON THE NOMINATION PROCESS WAS SO GREAT--AND SO LONG-- IS THAT IT WAS A CONTEST BETWEEN THE DNC AND THE DLC. The Corporations would not give up easily. Obama is the only hope of restoring our government and our economy to where it should be, by re-regulating businesses and banks. Obama is a major threat to them, that is why smart people understand that Obama must be physically protected as he is the enemy of un-regulated Corporations, banks, oil companies, etc.
In addition, this fight is about the Supreme Court. It is probably the most important issue on the table as it affects every aspect of our lives, especially when it is co-joined by a criminal and corrupt administration like Bush. Remember we have Bush because of the Supreme Court. Their decision was as much a corporate decision as it was a political decision.
Sorry if I called you a Republican. This is not the time to attack Obama, but to support him. Many of his decisions, like FISA have a very deep understanding of the problem, more than just immunity for telecoms, which can be addressed at a later date. It was more important to re-establish and re-institutionalize the 4th Amendment which we have not had for over 1 year---Yes, illegal spying has been going on for 7 years, but it has only been in the last year that it was taken out of the Constitution. Before, that the spying was just a violation of the 4th Amendment. Besides, the FISA Bill DID NOT give criminal immunity to the telecoms, only civil immunity, which can be re-instituted at a later time.
Also, sorry for the long post. I just people need to think DEEPER, not give knee-jerk reactions.
