San Francisco, California – November 25 - Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) have announced their intention to hold Operation First Casualty in Union Square, a popular place for shoppers to congregate in between shops. Truth is the first casualty of any conflict and Operation First Casualty is street theater designed to show the brutal and unjust consequences of occupying a foreign country. During the exercise brave civilian volunteers will be rounded up by IVAW members and arrested in the same style used in Iraq. They will then be transported by patrol to various locations. While en route, they will take simulated fire, lose a fellow soldier to that fire, and upon arriving at Moscone center, will commence mock interrogations of the captured civilians. From there, they will move to U.N. Plaza where Food Not Bombs will be serving lunch to the homeless highlighting the thousands of veterans who are homeless.

"Our aim is to show the American public the truth of the US occupation in Iraq, and the effects on returning soldiers" said Eddie Falcon, IVAW spokesperson.

IVAW is also seeking:

  • Immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq;
  • Reparations for the human and structural damages Iraq has suffered, and stopping the corporate pillaging of Iraq so that their people can control their own lives and future; and
  • Full benefits, adequate health care (including mental health), and other supports for returning servicemen and women.

This event is co-sponsored by:

  • Courage to Resist
  • Food Not Bombs
  • Veterans for Peace
  • World Can't Wait

f bombs and violence near ice skating rink in union square

Thank you for your service to our country...Fuck your your actions today in the square.

Unfortunately, my wife, five year old son, and two year old son were in the square to look at ice skating times. They had just arrived and did not receive any warning of your demonstration. When several people in fatigues attacked people sitting at a table all three of them ran and hid on the ground behind a table. My five year old son wet his pants. When my five year old returned to the hotel he was scared and shaking. I don't know if your intention was to make people think this was real or not. What I do know is that you scared my family to death. As a father wanting to defend my family I would love nothing more than to take my anger out on one or more of you. You brought your foul language and into an area where children are playing. My son is now convinced that both soldiers and police are bad (police were standing by and did noting). In your sick minds I'm sure you accomplished your objective...to show all of us how the evil U.S. military scares children in Iraq. So congratulations. The only part of your display missing were the local population defending themselves. You cowards who do this in a family area where no one will retaliate are unbelievable. I don't care who you are or who you represent. You threatened my family. You have made me feel the need to defend them. Go ahead and use this to say..."see, it worked." Just know that one day you will do this and an unsuspecting father like me may be down there. When he finds out that it is not real I hope he does to you what I wish I could. Perhaps they will be armed. What would it take to make you all piss your pants you scumbag?

Scared To 'Death'

There are millions of dead and displaced Iraqis and well over 4000 dead US soldiers in our war on Iraq alone

Tell me one thing.

Do you even KNOW a soldier?

Have you ever seen anything in your life that looks like this?

The pairs of combat boots standing around that scene have come home now, and they're trying to signify what they saw.
