NY'rs Rally in Protest of NYPost Cartoon Tomorrow Noon; Read Rev. Sharpton's Statement
Sharpton Pissed At Post: Activist calls for protest tomorrow; demands explanation for paper's "dead monkey/stimulus cartoon." | EurWeb
*In no uncertain terms Reverend Al Sharpton is taking aim at the NY Post over a cartoon that apparently represents President Barack Obama as a monkey killed by NYPD, because one officer says to other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
Here's a statement by Rev Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network:
New York, NY (February 18, 2009) -- The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best, given the racist attacks throughout history that have made African-Americans synonymous with monkeys.
One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual inference to this form of racism when, in the cartoon, the police say after shooting a chimpanzee, "now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."
Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder whether the Post cartoonist was inferring that a monkey wrote it? Given that the New York Post cartoonist has come under heavy fire in the past for racially tinged cartoons including the infamous cartoons depicting 2001 mayoral candidate Freddy Ferrer and me in very unflattering ways (that ultimately was used as a campaign tactic to inflame racial prejudices), one cannot ignore that history when looking at this morning's cartoon.
The Post should at least clarify what point they were trying to make in this cartoon, and reprimand their cartoonist for making inferences that are offensive and divisive at a time the nation struggles to come together to stabilize the economy if, in fact, this was yet another racially charged cartoon.
The NY Post's cartoon:
REV. AL SHARPTON, MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK AND OTHER LEADERS TO PICKET IN FRONT OF THE NEW YORK POST HEADQUARTERS TO PROTEST THE "RACIALLY OFFENSIVE" CARTOON BY POST CARTOONIST SEAN DELONAS
WHERE:
1211 6th Ave between 47th and 48th Sts., New York, NY
WHEN:
Thursday, February 19, 2009 - 12:00 pm
In response to Sharpton, NY Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said:
"The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

My sincerest apologies to all chimpanzee
I will admit to having referred to former (p)resident Bush as a Smirking Chimp. I know nothing of the violent chimp in Connecticut but I know that I had called our former violent (p)resident a "chimp". George Bush is a war criminal and a violent human who has endangered both humans and chimps all over the world.
Barak Obama's record will speak for itself. Unfortunately, things are not looking good so far as he runs headlong into the graveyard of empires. Does he have genocide on this mind?
Not in my name!
4Peace
it's satire plain and simple
Connecticut cop forced to shoot chip is satire. We need to leave
it (the satire) alone because of free speech. I had started a reply
to this thread NY'rs Rally in Protest of NYPost Cartoon .....
being indignant of a graphic cartoon and guns and violence. I do not
see a connection between the author of the Stimulus Bill and
the chimpanzee other than the occurrence on the same day. People
comparing the chimpanzee and Obama fall into a trap because it is
they that are being racist, not the artist.
EW
oops, duped it
Good morning 4peace & EW :-)
ARREST BUSHCO & RICO PNAC/FARA AIPAC...PNAC is Bush/Cheney's "Helter Skelter" !
Doesn't this fall under the "yelling fire in a theatre" niche?
Have not seen the cartoon, so cannot judge, but description sounds pretty violent based towards a sitting president. Silly me, I thought that was against the law already!
ARREST BUSHCO & RICO PNAC/FARA AIPAC...PNAC is Bush/Cheney's "Helter Skelter" !
here's where I got the 'toon
Al Sharpton is on his way to NY Post to raise hell about this toon - Democratic Underground
EW
Oops, not 'shoot chip', - 'shoot chimp'
Spell checkers have imperfections.
EW
lol, good thing coffee was swallowed!~
Clarifying ~ laughing with EW, NOT at Chip ;-)

I'm sorry but...
...I don't see the cartoon pointing to Obummer. (Has anyone even ASKED the artist yet?)
I took it as meaning that the stimulus rape was so stupid that even a monkey could have written it, or did, in fact, write it.
It would take a racist, like Sharpton, to see it otherwise.

Our President's name is "Obama."
The artist's website in down, not available.
Racism ?
If only it was that simple. This cartoon incites violence in the form of assassination against person(s) who wrote the last stimulus bill. It is not merely tasteless, it is dangerous. I genuinely thought this was against the law already. If not, there oughtta be a law! Meanwhile, shoethrower sits in prison...

This is satire
I looked at a few other cartoons at
Delonas - New York Post Online Edition- New York Post and I feel that anyone who depicts this cartoon as representing President Obama has a guilt complex. Check out some more of Delonas' art.
Obama is a very good looking gentleman, well mannered, and has good intentions. The satire is about whoever wrote the Stimulus Bill. Obama was not the author, he was one of the many sponsors.
EW
Guilt complex
I disagree with your opinion "that anyone who depicts this cartoon as representing President Obama has a guilt complex."
Obama marketed the Stimulus Bill by explaining it before large audiences, so can you definitely conclude that the cartoon was not aimed at him?
"Satirical" gun? "Racist" shooting?
This is NOT satire , it IS incitement to violence.
ARREST BUSHCO & RICO PNAC/FARA AIPAC...PNAC is Bush/Cheney's "Helter Skelter" !
trigger happy cops and trigger happy America
Sure, I'll buy incitement to violence with the cartoon showing the big bad cops talking tough. This chimpanzee was apparently trying to attack the police officer? I hate guns and war and any movie with a firearm plot. GW is often called "Chimp" and did he not sponsor a "bailout" of banks? Would he have been victimized if the chimpanzee episode happened during his term?
I do not like satire because it is usually hurtful. I did not want to be baited into a trap by jumping all over Delonas. I am not holier than thou. I am not better than the African, the Mexican, the Semitic and on and on. I feel that if you can picture that monkey in the cartoon as representing a negro then that is your problem and your association by guilt.
(I made up the sematic part because when I criticise Israel I am accused of being anti-semitic whereas a Palestinian is semitic?)
EW
I think if a "domesticated" leopard had been shot
then the cartoon still would have been inciting violence against politicians. But the fact that it was a chimpanzee just added "hate crime" fuel to the satirical fire.
