Kent State University will commemorate the 38th anniversary of the May 4 shootings this weekend with movies, poetry readings, a march and a ceremony, all concentrating on the question, "Where does it end?"

On May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on Kent students protesting the Vietnam War. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder were killed; nine others were injured.

This year, a poem Miller wrote in high school, in 1966, provides the commemoration's theme, "Where does it end?"

Scott Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector, will speak on the topic at noon Sunday, May 4, in the commons. Other activities can be found at http://dept.kent.edu/May4/ ."

A Proposal for a National Strike on MayDay, 2008

The original posting is on DocuDharma, 4 Apr 2008.

This is a simple proposal to not go to work for one day. If we do it individually and on random days, it matters not at all. If we do it together on one day by the thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, it will matter. The more who join, the more it will matter. United we stand, divided we fail to get their sufficient attention.

The theme of the strike is best expressed by the immortal words of Paddy Chayefsky. As the character Howard Beale in his screenplay Network proclaimed loudly:

"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

PETITION: Don’t Send 3000 NJ National Guard Troops to Iraq in June!

http://www.njpetition.org/

To: New Jersey Governor Corzine

Don’t Send 3000 NJ National Guard Troops to Iraq in June.

The Governors have succeeded in repealing Sec 1076 that gave the President control of National Guard troops for DOMESTIC emergencies. Now we urge them to De-federalize the national Guard by repealing the "Authorization of 2002" to stop sending National Guard to Iraq.

Governor Corzine, do not sacrifice one more young man or woman to the War in Iraq. This war has been mismanaged from the beginning and continues to spin out of control. Do not send one-half of the NJ National Guard to Iraq in June, (3000 of 6000 people).

Do not acquiesce to a lame-duck administration that has consistently operated in secret, persisted in illegal war, spawned the destabilization of Iraq and promoted illegal incarcerations and torture, endangering our troops.

The nonviolent resistance movement needs to reach the youth

I wrote the following in response to a young observer's reaction to the call to action a friend and I put out, "We Need A Nonviolent Revolution: Resist in March":

It is essential to reach younger folks as the movement for peace and social justice moves into a more protracted and serious phase. Many younger folks are jumping for joy at the idealism and hope of the Obama campaign, but as Malachy and I stated the answers to the tragedies and disarray in this country and the multitude of horrors our government has inflicted on others, does not lie with continuing to be deferential to the powers that be. We must go far, far beyond simply voting.
